I want to like this place, I really do. They try to be friendly, despite their annoying commercials. Additionally, they do give cars to low credit individuals with little money, and those people need chances. At the time we bought this extremely overpriced car with an extremely high interest rate we were both and needed a chance. We have other options now and bought our last car from a reputable Chevy dealer. Thankfully. With that being said, here is the problem:

This car comes with a Passtime device, a device I foresee getting banned in the near future by legal means. Why? The device is normally installed on older cars anyway because it is installed on high risk loans, but older cars have a lot of issues. Before the complaint I currently have gets mentioned I should warn people not to buy from any company using an ignition locking mechanism. The problem is that if you have one, and even if your payments are always made, sometimes cars stall. Ours, when we could drive it, would stall all the time.

Starting a car after a stall that uses a Passtime or other device like it is a huge and difficult issue. There were many intersections I thought I would get hit by traffic while waiting for it to reset to restart. You cannot immediately restart any car using Passtime. The device must reset. This is extremely dangerous in traffic, or in an emergency. If my daughter or wife were in trouble from an attacker, they also could not immediately start the car. By the time they did, even if it did not stall, they’d be a victim. So, beware of this device in general, especially when buying from predatory lenders that are already selling you a late model car.

Now, my complaint. This car had to sit at a Park and Ride for a few weeks because I had a stroke. The battery went dead, my problem and financial responsibility. We had a lot of troubles starting it because the alarm went off until the reset code and pay code were entered. It took phone help and 20 minutes to do so; it is not an easy task and is made even more daunting from the loud alarm blaring in your ears. This also makes it so difficult to hear the codes being entered, an absolute must.

Finally, we got it started and drove it home. Over time, due to it being such a horrible buy we do not drive it, the battery died again. No problem, we bought a new one. Actually, it turns out it was a huge problem. Again, as soon as the battery is sending juice to the car the alarm blares. You have to enter both a pay code and a reset code to stop it. After many weeks and several hours on most attempts, I have still been unsuccessful. Basically, what it boils down to is that we have been making payments on a car we cannot drive due to a lender installed device. So, whose responsibility is it to start my car? I have the necessary ingredients, keys, battery, gas, payment to lender, etc. but to no avail I cannot start the car.

Of course we call; afterall, the reset codes only last 24 hours anyway so they would know we are having issues even if we did not tell them. Their solution is to tow me to their dealership and have them look at the car. If it is a Passtime error, they will not charge me for the tow or error. If it is not a Passtime error, both the tow and the fix are on my dollar. First, it is definitely a Passtime problem because we had the problem before and were successfully able after much work to get the car started.  This is where most people would be thinking then maybe if we are still unsuccessful, maybe it is not a Passtime error. I feel that assumption would be wrong. It is a keypad/Passtime error; however, if not, you will see below how it should still be their responsibility.

Second, I am sure educated people see the problem with this tow. It is a tow due to a problem only they can fix. It is their device, so no matter what the problem is, they are the only ones able to do it. I would be trapped into trusting a company that has earned none of my trust. I could not choose where to take this car, I have to just trust them and their blank work order I would have to give them. After speaking to their mechanic, Dean, who was at least pleasant, I became convinced they are going to blame it on a security box that comes with the car.

I was not told this box existed, nor was I sold one. We would have opted to buy it. So, apparently, the box is my financial responsibility. If this car will not start because of this box, as they say, I am responsible to pay it, but why? It is a box that comes with the manufactured car it should have been included and if they failed to include it, why should I now be forced to trust only them to fix it? This whole company preys on unsuspecting people in order to continuously trap them, much like quick loans do.

Consequently, due to all this Passtime problems, it boils down to me not being able to start a car that I have kept my legal obligations on, payments and insurance, but they have failed to provide me with a car that will start after the said payments and insurance. Mechanical issues are my financial responsibility, but this is a Passtime ignition error and they should provide me with a running car, they have not and basically will only do so if I "trust them" to tow it, and diagnose it, and then pay them for doing so. We have the ability to get another car from a reputable lender, so ultimately we will probably never go back or ever advise others to. '

After years of payments we still owe almost $3,000.00 on a 2002 Chrysler Sebring; why would I give them a blank work order on it when “only they” can diagnose it?  We have considered paying it off several times, but due to it being a constant problem even before all this we always wanted options. I have missed many medical appointments due to this car that I have been unable to drive since November. I had to miss one today, and will have to miss one an extremely important one Monday as well. That is what being a nice guy while dealing with a company like this causes.

I feel they should not only provide me with their legally binding agreed upon car, a car that starts when paid, but they should have offered to come here in person at first sign of problem and get it started while in my driveway and under my supervision. They will not. My solution will probably have to involve me wearing a sandwich board that reads "Ask me before you buy from here." outside their locations (on public property, of course) every day. I am medically retired and have all the time in the world. I do not foresee them making right on this without a lot of bad publicity; so, my only recourse is to alert people and tell everybody I can my story so they can decide for themselves if this company is really worth it when there are other options for people in this area.
