I met "the area manager" at a pool at the La Quinta and he explained to me what he does for a living. He manages people who deliver the phone book. I was interested in doing what he does for my own reasons. I mistakenly got mixed up with it because I felt like if I did become a manager, doing what he does I should know the business better. So on the hottest day of the year (102*) I went into the company meeting in a deserted looking warehouse and it took about 2 1/2 hours to complete a supposed 30 minute presentation. I loaded my car with over 3,500 phone books and spent the next day and the day after it, bagging them and delivering them to a location over 55 miles away. The process of the bagging, the schedule of the route, the delivery itself and all the infinite unusual addresses is extraordinarily tedious, timestaking, and impossible. I had completed the task in about 10 -12 hours, for one route. When I arrived home I looked up the addresses that did not compute, on my route. They were, North, South,
East and West of the small town of Level Plains, Alabama and maybe 50 or so miles in every direction. There was no explanation as to where they might be on the papers I recieved. No one tried to tie the delivery route into my home which was in itself, a 45 minute drive. They had me delivering ONE phone book, 47 miles west, profitting 20 cents, and another one 37 miles south of that location, another 20 cents. (SIZZLE)Let me also say that the town in Level Plains, Ala was clearly mapped out online and the streets were mostly St A- H and that these streets were not on my route to make things even worse. I was absolutely furious.
So I abandoned the whole process, and explained why. . . to Jeff, the manager, who commented about the obvious bad route. (I am a newby, I dont know what to do in the beginning to schedule a route. I am trying to do the very best I can to learn this incredibly complicated process with multiple forms to be filled out for everything). I was even fingerprinted as tho I were being booked into prison like I was a felon. When you are delivering the phone book, everyone on my route seemed to have a pit bull, angry and suspicious when you drive slowly past them, much less get out. I had the police called on me, people cussed me out, It was unfathomably hot, and difficult to say the least, to drive, look at a route, throw papers, get out and walk the papers up the walk to the house to get signatures, and fill this paperwork out.
So I spent about $45 in gas; The warehouse I had been to was shut down and locked. I had to find the contact information for Jeff from some people who used to work for this company who were up in Maryland, and by the time I had re-routed myself around an old abandoned warehouse with all the locked gates that Saturday, this "manager" determined I delivered around 300 phone books, roughly 1/2 of the actual delivery. I asked that he mail me the check and assumed I would never see a dime of the money since everything about this company is FUBAR, if you know what I mean. And guess what? It is two weeks later, and I am now looking into where that check might have gotten to. It was for a grand total of $66 dollars to be halved with my grand daughter, whom I tragically duped into getting involved with this farce. I am livid, about all of it and advise anyone with a grain of common sense and any degree of integrity to walk away and do not involve yourself with these people who are all about the rip off. They rationalized that I did not deliver the amount of books, which were documented and signed for by saying the figures were based on the amount of phone books that I returned to them. (Could they have a inside policy of overloading folks if this is their measure of compensence) I can easily attribute all of this to "a lesson learned", but no one else should have to do thru this h*** and for no return on your investiture.
Signed,
Bonified Idiot,
in Dothan, Al
