I purchased my second (and last) Dell machine three months ago. I made my purchase online and they advertised a one-year no interest offer if I qualified with Dell Financial Services through their "preferred customer account". I applied and I was told that I qualified. I made my purchase and decided to pay it off before the year was over. I had made one payment of $55 the first month and the second month, I paid $150, still no interest.

Now I just received my third invoice and suddenly my account balance has gone up, my interest rate is 27.99% APR and I have a "deferred finance charge" of 15.54 and a "finance charge" of 16.49. I called the customer service reps (in India) and was told that I only qualified for a 25 day no interest. I assured the representative that I would not have agreed to something like that but she insisted that I had, providing no proof that I had agreed to such a thing.

Since then, I have tried the website, the online help, the message boards, and have found that I am not alone in the scam. I am furious and will charge the rest of what I owe to my credit card, which believe it or not, has lower interest rates.

I have read about penalties for early payment, so I can deal with that next, I am sure...

Dell Financial Services now name calling?

AUTHOR: Adriana - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 18, 2004

As per your rebuttal, you indicate that every "qualified customer" has their terms and conditions read twice. First of all, it was an online purchase, so no such thing happened. Second, you indicated that every customer is mailed their terms and conditions, also not the case. I kept all my paperwork and only received with my shipment a description of the purchase (i.e., the computer and its parts).

I called customer service representatives to request a copy of the agreement once I found out how much money they were charging me and I never received it. I got on the message boards and requested the same in writing from the moderators, I am waiting for that. I have paid off the balance and vowed to never do business with Dell or DFS again.

There must be something to it if dozens of people are reporting the same experience. If you don't believe me, visit the Dell Financial Services-Dell Preferred Account message boards and see for yourself how disgruntled buyers are. I am sure they would not appreciate being called idiots or liars either.

Pay Attention... regect the agreement

AUTHOR: Joshua - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 17, 2004

First of all, I work for Dell Home Sales & Financing, and therefore sign up approximately half of all my customers for the "Dell Preferred Account" (in cooperation with CIT Bank). We read every qualified customer their terms and conditions twice: once when they are approved and once when we ask permission to charge their purchase to the account.

Also, every customer is mailed their terms and conditions, and therefore have a second chance to decline the financing. If they provide an email address, we email them a copy as well. So, the complainer here is either a) an idiot, b) lying, or c) they were lied to, and never gave a verbal agreement or adress to send the agreement to. I find C very unlikely. For, if they recieved a computer, they must have provided an address. In this event, they would have had the opportunity to review and regect the agreement.
