I first worked for this company 10 years ago and my work schedule that they had me do ended up putting me in the hostipal because of my work scedule of 80+hours a week with no time off.

I quit this company and now in 2003 I went back to work for them with the promise from the company that this would not happen again. I was a manager both times that I was with the company.

This last time I was told that I would be on salary and work a 45 hour week with time off. Well they were dishonest with me again. I was once again working 80+hours again. Was told several times that it was mandentory that I work the extra hours, but no extra money.

I think it is very unfair to work someone this way. Unrealistic working conditions made it impossible to meet the demands of my district manager and was under constant threat of being dismissed for not complying with these and other impossible conditions.

These and other practices throughout the company are common. In this way they maintain a lower percentage of bonus's and raises given to management.

At the present time there is a law suit against the company for overworking and underpaying their managers in Alabama.

Working conditions are not what they should be. In some stores they do not have a place for their employees to take there lunch breaks, and not enough employees to cover breaks.

I no longer work for this company and will NEVER AGAIN!!The pay SUCKS!! And so does the hours.

agreeded - The report of wide spead abuse to management and staff is the truth.

AUTHOR: Penny - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 16, 2006

I have been with the company for several years and have wittnessed it and documented it. I am a key holder and missing funds is the way they use to get rid of a key holder who has the goods on them and they know it. Delay and stall is the rule of first conduct with all business. From workmans com claims, pay raises, funds missing, staff removal. It is all carefully set up. I myself at this moment is under going investigation along with the present manager. We know and can prove they are monitoring the computer threw the phone systems and are changing the information in them. We have the proof. What to do with this proof is the problem. We are small town workers who can not afford the attorneys and the long years of battle it takes to nail these people. Try to find a attorney as we have and see if you can get one to commit to this dirty fight that will be appealed and stalled and delayed for years.

Another tired Former Dollar General Manager

AUTHOR: Cindy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 28, 2004

I to am a former manager for DG. After training the store I was put in was a complete mess. The employee bathroom had a non-functional toliet, no hot water and the roof leaked. The freight in the backroom was unbelivable, we had no choice but to unload the truck onto the salesfloor. I was promised by the regional that he would send in extra people to help get the store back to standards but this never happened.

My assistant manager was taking money from the petty cash and deposits but I was unable to prove it at the time so I told him that all deposits were to remain unsealed until I could verify them and then I would seal them and take them to the bank. My district manager and loss prevention were aware of what was going on with the missing money and my feelings that it was my assistant.

Shortly after my third key told me that she witnessed him taking money and I immediately reported it to my dm and he was fired. One week later they fired me because I went against company policy of not making two bank deposits a day, which I wasn't able to do if I was the one that needed to verify all deposits before they were sealed. I was fired for failure to protect company assests. What a joke.

I was trying to protect company assets from being stolen by my assistant. DG then fought unemployment benefits, three times I had a telephone conference and three times they said they weren't prepared and were given another date. I finally gave up which I shouldn't have since I have been unable to find another position and with no UC have become finacially ruined.

I did receive a class action lawsuit in the mail that former managers are suing for the exact same things you stated however, I never mailed it back in time. To all of you who shop at a DG take a look at what the stores look like and realize that it looks that way because at any given time there is probably only a manager and one employee in the store and they are expected to help customers, stock, run the register, go to the bank, unload the truck, clean, do markups/downs, do resets etc.
