WE WILL NEVER RENT FROM DOLLAR RENT A CAR AGAIN AFTER WHAT HAPPENED TO US!!!
This letter is concerning a recent car rental in Roatan, Honduras with your company.
We had made an online booking for a small car through Expedia from 3/22 – 3/30/2015.
Upon arrival at the Dollar Rent a Car counter at the Roatan airport, we were given a red …..
A Dollar employee performed a walkaround inspection and noted existing scratches and dents on the car.
He verified the presence of the spare tire and jack, which was located in the trunk area. He did NOT inspect the spare for damages or wear (did not remove spare tire from compartment).
All observations were noted on a vehicle check out sheet which we signed.
Upon returning the vehicle to the same rental location, a male and female employee of Dollar approached the car curbside at the terminal. While the female verified fuel level, the male employee went straight to open the trunk. He then removed the cover and removed the spare tire out of its compartment.
After thoroughly inspecting the spare and conversing extensively with his female co-worker in Spanish, I asked him what the problem was. He replied that the spare had been used and mounted while the car was in our possession. The tire was covered in dirt and had damage to the rim, and indeed looked like it at been used at some point.
I told him, that neither my wife nor I had used/mounted the spare tire. In fact, we had not even touched the spare.
Further, he told us that we had to pay $90 to replace the damaged tire. Of course, we were outraged and asked to speak to a supervisor.
It so happened that supervisor Sra Anna Barahona was talking to another customer at the Dollar counter.
After explaining the situation to her, she straight out accused my wife and I of having used the spare tire and damaged it in the process. We explained to her that we had not used the tire and that this very much looked like a scam which the Dollar employees probably repeated over and over to make an extra buck.
Even after repeating our innocence several times, she just walked away. She was later unavailable to talk to us further, and relayed to us via her counter help that we could settle the issue with just paying $40.00.
We had no choice, but to accept the charges. We almost missed our plane because of this incident. We will dispute this charge through American Express.
Interestingly, while waiting in line for our airline check-in, I noticed the very same car we had just returned being re-rented by another customer. I approached the customer and advised him to be cautious and inspect the spare tire before signing the check-out sheet. As he pulls out the spare tire, wouldn’t you know it, the same spare that we just got scammed with, was back in the trunk, waiting for its next unsuspecting victim.
In the past, we have rented cars from your company on numerous occasions, and were always pleased with your product and good customer service. In fact, we recommended Dollar Rent A Car to many of our friends. As you know, there are many choices available when it comes to car rentals.
However, this recent, very unpleasant incident has left a bitter taste in our mouths. How is it possible that employees of your Roatan location are running a scam such as this one under the Dollar Rent A Car brand? These guys need to be stopped.
