Perhaps as much as a year ago, I filled out a survey online because I was supposedly entering a drawing for a prize provided, incidentally, by Luxury Gifts.  I did not order a single thing because I kept clicking through (refusing) the various offerings.  Eventually I gave up and quit.  Next morning, lo and behold, I found that quite a few charges had been made to my credit card totally without my consent.

After alerting the credit card to the fraudulent charges, I contacted each of the companies involved and explained what happened, saying that I did NOT order any products and how the Luxury Gifts survey had passed on incorrect information.  I also told them that Luxury Gifts was probably ripping off other people (as well as their client companies) too.

Everyone except Doubleday Book Club apologized for their supposed unknowing participation in the scam and promptly rescinded their charges which I'd told them I wouldn't pay anyhow.  Doubleday continued to harrass me, however, despite my explanations of innocence and warnings of legal retribution if they continued.  I never ordered from them, never received unordered merchandise, and would not be bullied into paying for their transgressions.

Eventually it seemed they'd decided to stop harrassing me; but over a week ago I started to get automated phone calls from Takhargroup insisting that I respond to their calls.  Instead I looked them up online and discovered what they were up to, then sent them an angry email demanding an explanation and the identity of their client, who at the time I didn't know.  They refused to divulge that by email and after at least the 6th automated call, I did phone them this afternoon to demand an explanation.  That's when I found out Doubleday was still trying to extort money they falsely claimed was owed to them.

The man who answered the phone listened to what I had to say but then became very rude when I warned him that this was the last chance for them to quit before I turned them and Doubleday over to the authorities for illegal harrassment and, I might add, fraud.  When I told him I know the law regarding consumer fraud, he asked in the most insulting tone possible, "Is this a regular occurrence with you?"

I answered quite angrily that knowing my consumer rights did not make me a deadbeat of any kind, and that between now and Monday when I plan to forward my complaint to the authorities, I'd air my grievance on every consumer complaint website I could find on the internet.  So here I am now, beginning with Rip Off Report because that's the first one the search engine turned up.  I'm sure there are many others just waiting for me to use their services.
