I signed up for Doubleday Large Print book club on behalf of my aging mother-in-law who wanted large print books to read.  I ordered a few books under the initial contract and they were received.  Within a few days, my mother-in-law went into an assisted living center and was unable to enjoy any further books.  I did not ask for my money back or ask to be released from my contract.  I did call and ask that they allow me to purchase something other than Large Print books (regular books, audio books, calendards, DVDs, anything really that my family could use.)  I thought this was a reasonable request.  I was told that the club only offers Large Print books and that I would be required to fulfill the purchase requirements.  A few months later, I received a notice that the Club had charged $99.24 to my registered American Express for "the four remaining books required to complete the membership."  The total was calculated by "taking the number of remaining books I agreed to buy, multiplied by the club's average book price (including S&H and sales tax.)"  I went online to place an order, but after I spent 30 minutes making selections, I was told my account was suspended, to call customer service.  I called customer service and spent 10 minutes waiting for an answer.  When I finally got one, I was told I could not buy anything other than Large Print books - despite the fact that I had found otherwise through the website.  I complained, but was given no other options.  I picked out four books - which come to a total much less than the $99.24 I was charged even when adding S&H and tax.  I again asked about this and was given no other options.  This seems outrageous to me.  I won't be using Doubleday for anything else in the future.
