Doug Justus stated that the vehicle he sold us had been inspected by his mechanic and was in good safe running condition. The vehicle broke down and was towed - we found out the drive axle on the drivers side had been given a temporary unsafe fix not fit for normal driving was the reason for the breakdown -

We were told the vehicle should never have been driven under normal conditions with the temporary fix making the vehicle unsafe. The vehicle was sold by Mr. Justus himself as the owner/salesperson as safe reliable transportation for our 16 year old son. Mr. Justus stated that his mechanic had inspected the vehicle, the oil had been changed and it was safe reliable transportation.

We bought from a dealership and not a private party to avoid this very type of situation - Dealerships should be properly informing and selling SAFE vehicles that have been properly inspected prior to sale and advertising.

Mr. Justus' website states " In order to maintain competitive pricing we do our best to ensure that all our vehicles are in good, safe running order." Mr. Justus now states that the only inspection that was performed on the car was him driving down the road to see if it sounded and drove ok prior to putting it on his used car lot - he states that is what he does with most of his cars unless he hears a strange noise.

We now have documentation and mechanics that are willing to talk about the unsafe condition (not just the axle) that the car was sold in.

To boot ... we tried to handle this like he was an honest business operator ... and filed with the BBB. That of course got us nowhere with the BBB finally responding with this email:

Complaint ID#: 8004497
Business Name: Doug Justus Auto Center

The Better Business Bureau has made several attempts to contact the business regarding the above referenced complaint. We regret to inform you that we have not received a response from the company.

Go Figure .... and that's not even all there is to this story .. the vehicle was purchased in February and we have been given several temporary tags and the dealer is yet to give us a permanent plate which we paid for nor has he given us the title yet!

I bought a car from them three years ago and had it inspected before I signed the paperwork and the inspection came out clean. Since then the only thing the car has needed was a alternator and for three years I think that's a great investment.

I honestly think this is a rare thing to happen. And if the axle was 'temp' fixed as you stated there would have been a noticeable noise/vibration coming from it that would have been easily noticeable within a very short time.

If he's still selling cars how he did when I bought mine, it was a as-is warranty, which means you should have it checked out by a third party mechanic shop before you buy so you know what you're getting into. Take this as a lesson learned, nothing cheap is problem free.

Our company would like to let consumers know the facts about this report. First this report reflects one deal. WE sale apporoximatly 1,000 car per year. We use a no sales presssure approach. All cars are clearly priced and each car has a information sticker listing all the details on each car. We also have the autocheck report on each car listed on our website WWW.DougJustus.com.

As for the compalint the customer purchased a 1991 vw passat with 170,000 miles for $2200. They could not pay the taxes so I told them I would hold the tiltle and give them 30 days to pay taxes. The customers 16 year old son drove the car and at the end of the 30 days they could not pay so I issued a 2nd tag and they continued to drive the car(never any complaints). Then after they drove the car for 2 months the customer said the car was unsafe and wanted her money back. We always try to be fair but we can not be expected to give a refund on a high mileage $2,000 car that is sold AS IS two months after the sale.

All of this could have been avoided if you had just taken it to a third party repair garage anywhere in the Knoxville area and had them look the car over before you purchased it. It would have saved you a lot of money to just get them to look it over, run a diagnostic, and find the problem, then you would have never run into this issue because you would have known it was an unsafe car.

I've dealt with these guys and they are more than willing to drive the car wherever you want in the Knoxville area and let someone else look at it and pick it up.
