I had used Dr. Chris Harper in the past and he always came across as caring and sympathetic with the problems I came in with. I acquired a job in a local physicians office and changed my pcm to my employer. While employed I ruptured 3 discs in my lower back and had three laminectomies. I have suffered with severe low back pain and was in a pain contract with my employer. I couldn't continue working so when I decided to find another dr, Dr. Harper was my first choice. As soon as I started seeing him and explained my situation he accepted me as a patient. I saw him for the initial visit and he treated me ok but each subsequent visit his attitude changed. He preceded to do urine drug screens on me every visit. My insurance stopped paying for these screenings after a couple of them. When I complained to Dr. Harper that I was running up quite a tab with my insurance carrier he simply stated that he was going to continue to screen me as long as he gave me pain meds. Needless to say $3000 dollars later I am looking for a new PCM. He was rude, uncaring and I felt that he was prejudiced against pain sufferers in pain management. I've never been a drug seeker and never will be and to be treated that way by a man that I had respected and had always treated me well was very disappointing. I would never, ever recommend him to anyone looking for a compassionate ear or for that matter a professional physician. He greatly disappointed me with his horrible attitude. And by the way I never failed a single drug screen. He is a horrible, rude little man. I will and will never recommend this practice to anyone!!!!

I see Dr. Harper for my medical needs. I see a pain specialist for my pain needs. The person with the complaint needs to understand how pain management now works in our area. Most PCPs no longer treat pain that is chronic in nature. The DEA and CDC guidelines have made it difficult for our medical doctors to treat us, due to abuse, and deaths, of others. We may not always like it, but that is the way it is. I give urine samples at most of my visits to my pain management doctor. I follow the rules closely. I have had chronic pain for nearly 12 years. You can read the CDC guidelines on their website. Then you will find that you were lucky to have Dr. Harper prescribe to you at all. Drug screens are not an option. You must always assume you are going to have to do one. I happily oblige. My insurance pays nearly all of mine, but I am seen by a specialist. You must contact your insurance if they are not paying. Sometimes they can help to make recommendations to get certain tests that will be covered. Do not blame Dr. Harper for practicing safe medicine. For pain management, see a specialist. I'm sure he would have been glad to refer you if you had simply asked. He is a caring doctor who wants to do what's safe for you and him. Thank you.

I am sorry you feel this way. Unfortunately for doctors everywhere, drug abuse and trafficking are rampant in this country. Studies show that prescription drug abuse, in particular, is becoming a huge problem in our society. Drug overdoses are at an all time high. Many people use multiple doctors to get pills they traffic on the street to minors and or addicts or they use to get high themselves. We've had to increase the frequency of urine drug screens accordingly. Since we started doing drug screens more frequently, I've been amazed and sometimes shocked by the number and types of people we've discovered abusing or trafficking prescriptions. Many of these patients were people no one would suspect. Had you been treated for your pain in a chronic pain clinic, you'd have been required to do a urine drug screen every single visit before even being seen. I do try hard to represent Christ in my love for and care of others, so it saddens me that you feel I was rude in any way. I sincerely apologize. I pray that you find what you are looking for. God bless.
Chris Harper, MD
