I started dealing with Dr. Sussman in February 2015.

My fiancee Emily Wilson had gone to his office on December 2 2014.

She wanted to do 1 simple test that would not cost very much out of pocket.

She explained to the nurse that she was between insurance plans at the moment and did not have insurance.

Imagine our surprise when the bill from the lab showed up for over $780 dollars.

I found out that they had run a half dozen tests because the 1 simple test she had wanted was included in a package test.

They did this even after she told the nurse she was not on an insurance plan at the moment.

The nurse apparently did not care.

When I called them on the phone and told the receptionist she was being recorded, she got very defensive and said the doctor is not in and you need to call back on thursday, then hung up.

I finally managed to speak with Dr. Sussman.

I asked him if he would pay the rest of the $780, we did not have an issue with paying for the test that was ordered, which came out to $81.12

He said no, I can't do that.

He finally agreed to pay half the amount, since they have deals with the lab companies and it would not cost him anything to do so.

I agreed on my fiancee's behalf to pay $390

I wanted to fight it in court, but she convinced me not to.

We really shouldn't have even had to get this far.

If the doctor really cared about his reputation or his patients at all he should have immediately apologized for the mistake and offered to pay the rest of the bill.

Hello Stacey,

Have you even read what I wrote?  I clearly stated that Emily told the nurse that she did not have insurance and she only needed 1 simple test done.

IF that was not possible she should have let her know that multiple tests would have to be done and she would need to pay for those other tests.

She should not have to owe anything for those other tests since she never consented to have them done!

She usually has insurance, except for the month of December when she was trying to switch insurances at that time.

And for the record I know the laws, I specifically told the receptionists and the doctor I was recording the call.

It is perfectly legal to record someone if you let them know they are being recorded.

I still cannot believe you're blaming Emily for this.

No reasonable doctor that I know of would run tests without the patient's permission and then leave them to deal with the cost of the lab!

I would be upset even if I had insurance that paid most of the labs!

Your "fiance" knew she did not have insurance but went in for the tests and Drs visit anyway.  The nurse has nothing to do with insurance or billing so what is the reason you are blaming the nurse??  AND you have alot of nerve to ask the DR to pay a bill that YOUR fiance owes!!! Where do you think that money goes?? NOT in his pocket for sure!!! It goes to pay bills, staff, insurance etc etc.

IF your "fiance" did not have insurance then she should have gone to a clinic that accepts uninsured individuals that work on a sliding scale basis.  AND what gives you the right to record someone without their permission??? Guess you need to check your State laws about that.  As for suing them good luck -
