I thought I'd help my sister out and replace the leaking fork seal on her motorcycle for her. After I had the bike apart and tried to disassemble the forks, I quickly found out that I didn't have the tools necessary to do the job. I then took the FORKS ONLY to Dreyer to have the fork seals (that I purchased in there parts department) to have them installed. They said no problem, take about 7-10 days. 10 days later, I call to see if they are done. No, but they promise them done tomorrow. Ok, how much will the total be I ask. I'm told about $140 dollars.
I paused...... then said.... that's 2 hours labor! She says, yea.... that's what the book says it takes. I tell hear, uh huh.... if I'd brought in the WHOLE bike and you had to disassemble it and reassemble it. I just dropped off the forks only. She said there was nothing she could do.
So, I drove the 20 miles into town, picked up my UNWORKED on forks, and told her that they could take there 2 hour shop rate and stick it!! A factory trained mechanic should have been able to do that job in 15-20 minutes with the necessary tools. They had them for 10 days and couldn't get in done in the promised time and tried to stick me with that stupid shop manual rate of 2 hours labor.
The girl at the service counter didn't even care that I wasn't happy, just gave me back my forks (I had to demand the seals back too!!) and didn't even TRY to salvage the situation.
So, what do I do about the seals?? I go down the street and have a local independant guy install them for $40 dollars.

Sorry to hear you were unhappy

I am sorry to hear you were unhappy with the service department. The lady you referred to back in 2002 no longer works here.
The employees who now work at the service counter give accurate time frames when you make an appointment.
Because I don't know the year, make, or model of the motorcycle, it is hard for me to comment on the pricing. I will, however, say this:
All of our technicians are well trained, and have years of experience. We stand behind all of our service work. I am sure you can call around town and beat our service rates by a small amount. Keep in mind that the independent guys may or may not be properly trained. They also may or may not stand behind their work. It is fairly common for us to fix the mistakes made by independent guys.
I would be a little leery of someone who could do the job really quickly or cheaply. They may be rushing it and not doing a good job.
