Definitely Buyer Beware

My move was disaster from the time they showed up with blank paper work. I had contracted with a broker, they had that paperwork. Rushed for time, I had no alternative but to accept them. Just briefly, the arrived in an unmarked truck - supposedly the truck assigned to my move had broken down and this was a rental. Meaning my furniture would be loaded and unloaded into a warehouse, then loaded onto the truck once determined who was taking it. Now, I knew Duntara as American Moving & Storage.

When it was finally on its way, it was yet a different truck that was bringing it. The trucker called and gave me an approximately ETA. I sat around and waited, and waited. Finally I called the driver (because his number was in my caller id) to find out he had broken down and would not be there as planned. (Thanks for letting me know!) The next day, after dark, he says he is close and would be there soon. I was reluctant to have him deliver so late because I wanted proper lighting to examine my furniture. I had to call a friend to come be with me when he arrived as he insisted on delivering that night since he was already so far behind.

As he sat in the truck, his helper was moving things around in the truck, taking other people's items out to get to mine. Several time we went outside as we heard items being handled hard. I tried to keep up as items were brought in to take pictures. I noticed one of my delicate items had only a very well worn cloth over it and that the tape around the legs had come free. I only inspected the legs and was not present when he unwrapped it. Everything else was well wrapped and secured.

No, I did not buy insurance - which is horrendously expensive. The glass and picture items were wrapped by the mover with the expectation that they would be wrapped "professionally". The delicate item was a lightweight wooden chair. As the guy was leaving, I noticed that the arm was sheared off. He pretended not to have noticed. It broke in two peices, I could only find one and cannot fix it.

Anyway, I had a glass inset to a side/sofa table that the mover packed. It is quite long and beveled. He wrapped it but did not protect the edges, leaving them exposed with barely tape covering them. Needless to say the glass was broken.

So I finally got an estimate for the glass. I feel they owe me for the full replacement of the glass since they did not wrap it properly. All the other glass was wrapped correctly and arrived safely. I put in a claim for the glass, the weight of the chair and I beleive something else. I should mention that when they filled in the "blank" inventory of goods - boxes and labor - they overcharged me and did refund a bit of it but not all.

Just before the 120 days were up, I emailed and called with no response. At and after the full 120 days, I called and emailed, leaving voicemails and getting no response.

So, I put in a Better Business complaint even tho they are of course not members. They claim that they sent a check, talked to me and I said I didn't get it, and sent a money order, certified return receipt requested. I got this information from BBB mid-january. I don't know who they mailed something to or who they called but it wasn't me. I responded that never heard from, never received a call, an email, a check, a certified mail. I came short of calling them out and out liars. BBB has sent this back to them and I have yet to hear back. It wasn't a lot of money - $128. I just want to fix the glass so I can use the table.

Movers don't let you use credit cards and by the end of this, I understood why!
