As has been the case in other posts here, I am waiting and have waited since July, 2001 for a refund. I have received replies from Customer Service that range from, "I will check it out and get back to you" to, "The check has been 'processed' and should go into the mail within a couple of days". I was advised that the check was mailed a long time ago by one CSR but no one can determine if the check cleared. I have been in touch with one Cary Shaffner, 1 800 360-4048 ext 78507 in Harrisburg who promised me he would be "watching this closely to make sure it is resolved". That was in October and a check would be processed and I would receive it "within 6 to 8 weeks". On the 8th week I inquired where it was and he advised me that it "takes 8 to 10 weeks". Ten weeks was up on Christmas day. NO CHECK!!!!!!!!!!!!

I emailed them to inquire about the check. I received an email requesting the confirmation of my address. I confirmed the address. I was told to call if the check was not in the mail at "the end of the week". I called Monday, January 14, 2002 and asked to speak to a supervisor. The CSR, Todd (1 800-719-4660 ext 18934) said that the supervisor, Sarah, would look into it and call within 2 hours. I called back after three hours and was advised that Sarah had no information but she would call me as soon as she knew "anything".

This is the normal operating procedure for Earthlink. They will run you around until you just give up. I have never heard of anyone that ever received a refund from Earthlink. I have been in contact with numerous people that have had unwarranted charges made to a credit card and were refused refunds. Cary Shaffner requested I give him my credit card number so he could "credit the account within 24 hours". Sure!!! They can screw up an account this well and I want them to have my credit card number...NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you get a mail solicitation to sign up with Earthlink so you can receive a "free DVD player", throw that in the trash. It is where it belongs. They will require a 6 month contract, you will have to use a credit card or they will charge you to pay by check, the DVD player is cheap, and if you cancel within the 6 month period, they will charge your card $89 and also charge you for the DVD player.

Any solicitation from Earthlink is just cause to RUN very FAST the other direction.

Anyone wishing to contact and message about this may also check out the Yahoo message boards. There has been some discussion there as well.

In closing this post (there will be others), feel free to use the numbers referenced above. I think these people need to be told that the public is not required to tolerate treatment like this. Lies and thievery by "big business" is outrageous. Let Earthlink know by refusing to use the service or transferring to a different service. I personally would be interested in hearing from others regarding this issue. Use the Yahoo message boards to do so.

In the meantime, STAY AWAY FFROM EARTHLINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On January 22, 2002, I received my refund from Earthlink. The check was processed on December 28, 2001, according to their Customer Service but is dated January 17, 2002. The postmark indicated it was mailed on January 18, 2002. I have been promised this refund since July 20, 2001. It has required numerous emails, phone calls, snail mails, etc. It is a shame that someone has to put up with this kind of ignorance to get a refund when their service would be disconnected without delay after 30 days after non-payment. I encourage everyone to badger, berrate, brow-beat, and do not give up when you are due something from Earthlink. GO AFTER THEM!!!!!!!!!!! Do not take advantage of ANY "special offers" without reading and fully understanding every point about their "offers". Failure to abide by everything in the "offer" can and will give them the legal right to charge you $89 to close the account. BE AWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
