On Mar 23, 2003 I thought I was purchasing dsl from earthlink I got the equipment but it never worked. I tried contacting them several times and always got the run-around. At one time they said they would send someone out to see what the problem was I took the day off of work and NO ONE showed up. Not only did this happen once but THREE times and no one showed up.
I tried to cancel my subsciption but was not allowed to with out an early disconnect fee. I was told I would have to continue paying for one year before I could cancel it. It has been one year and I have paid them $537.20 for a year of dsl that never not even once ever worked and no one tried to help me. I just spoke with a CSR for the company who tried to belittle me and make me look stupid while he was laughing at me and telling me they would never refund my money.
I was also told I could not cancel until April 1, 2004. When I asked them to send someone out to check the equipment to see I was telling the truth, CSR said they couldn't because my account was already canceled, but I said not until Apr 1st so you have 3 days to send someone out. He said no they would not send someone out and I was just out of my money.

You can't balme earthlink

Wouldn't it have made more sense to find our for certain if dsl was available from earthlink in your area BEFORE you ordered and paid for anything? You can't balme earthlink or anyone else for your mistakes. You neglected to find out the facts before placing an order. You wanted dsl, ordered it, paid for it, then and only then did you find out that dsl was NOT available in your area. I do feel however that earthlink should have made that fact known to you at the time the order was placed. That is a mistake on their part but you also are at fault and need to accept your resposibility in this.

I'm glad you've never have had a problem with them but with more investigating I have found they do not supply dsl to my area but yet charged me EVERY since month for something that is or was never available...the $149 early disconnection is not the big issue. Why did I have to pay for a sevice for the whole year (which I did) that NEVER EVER WORKED..there's not a service here..

earthlink.net (dsl) never had a problem

First of all I'd like to say that I've used earthlink for the past several years and have never had a problem. Checking on earthlink's website and reading the info they supply about the different types of internet services they provide, it clearly states that early termination fees apply. Please read the fine print at the bottom of the dsl page and also in the policies sections. It also states they provide you with the kit for the dsl connection.
Why should earthlink be responsible for coming to your home to check your phone lines to make sure they are working properly? DSL internet connection works through your existing phone lines and is not their responsibility, it's your local phone company that lays the lines and provides the connection to your home. You should check with whomever provides your phone service to make sure the lines are working properly.
