Saw a 2006 Honda Civic on Craigslist for $3150 so I emailed the owner a few questions. Here was Sandra Miller's response:

My 2006 Honda Civic EX is still for sale, has no problems at all and is lien cleared. My asking price is $3,150. Probably it deserve more, but I'm asking this price because I'm forced to sell it quickly as I got an employee car and I don't need this car anymore. I have a clear title for it, no liens or loans and never smoked in. Has 45,729 miles and the VIN# is 2HGFA16846H504485. The buyer will receive the car with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it to his name.Shipping will be done whit DAS and it will take no more then 2-3 days. I have a friend there who will manage me a low price shipping and I assumed that it is my duty to pay for shipping it.It will be delivered directly to your address. Anyway, I have to let you know that I want a fast deal so if you are really interested in buying it,please reply with the following information's: -Your full name;-Your shipping address.(street, city, state, zip code)

The transaction will close only through eBay so we both will be protected. I want eBay because as they are the biggest company on the internet I think that we can close this deal fast and safe for both of us. Also I am not very familiar with the internet transactions and eBay is the only one I know. eBay should be a warranty because everything it's legal when they handle all the things and i can't pick up the money until you test and want to keep the car. We should make the transaction fast because i have many potential buyers right now. I will look for your email,so that we can move forward with this deal!

Then I received this email from Sandra Miller:

The car is located in Chicago at the shipping company (I just moved here with my new job), we will use eBay Purchase Protection Program so we be both protected and insured. The price for the car is $3,150 with shipping included. All paperwork are ready to be transfered to new owner name and address. The car is aready crated , and you will receive them together , all you need is to sing on delivery. The transaction fits the Vehicle Protection plan and will be covered by eBay. eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection reimburses buyers who are involved in a vehicle transaction through their program. The program provides reimbursement for all the situations that can appear in a transaction. The money will be sent to an eBay agent. After the payment is confirmed and secured by eBay I will start the shipping. The car will be in front at your door in max 3 days. From the moment you receive the car you have a 5 days inspection period. After the 5 days you have to decide if you want to keep the car or not. If you'll keep it, the payment will be released to me. In case you will not like the car and decide not to keep it, you will have to ship it back and you will be fully refunded.

If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name and the address where you want the car to be delivered and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.

I emailed her that yes I was interested with my name and address and next thing I get is 3 separate emails from Ebay Vehicle Protection with details on the transaction, that I am suppose to send the full amount of $3150 through Money Gram to a John Christopher who is an Ebay Agent in Atlanta, GA and the money will be held until 5 days after I receive the car before being released to Sandra Miller. I started to wonder why this would not be done through the usual PayPal and googled Ebay Vehicle Protection only to find MANY similar situations that scammed people out of their money.

Thank God, I never actually sent the money. Thank You to all who have previously posted this scam and saved me.

Yep..too good to be true...

That vehicle has a retail value of around $14,000+..so right there is a clue something is wrong being for sale at $3150. With a discount of that magnitude, there is no logical reason to have to ship the car..anyone locally would grab it up in a New York minute for twice that asking price. Another hint is the seller stating they will only go through ebay..okay, then why was it advertised on Craiglist? That is usually for local selling.

I guess there are some people gullible enough to have sent a money gram..and would have never seen that money again..or had any car shipped to them. There is no such thing as a money gram ebay agent.

I have sold cars through ebay before..and the protection works through paypal..as stated, the car is shipped, the funds are held in escrow for a length of time..buyer accepts the vehicle then the funds are released to the seller..or, the buyer ships it back and the funds are returned. It works no other way and no other agent or sending of money is involved.

eBay does not have a program that covers purchases from Craigslist. Neither does Craigslist.

The various names that the scammers employ are not really that important. The key is to look at how the scam works. They almost always revolve around the potential victim having to wire a payment to somebody that he or she does not know.
