I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan. I did not realize that I had a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty on this vehicle. I bought it as a certified used car. On 5/9/2009 I had an engine mount repaired. The dealership did not run my vin number to see if it was under warranty. In the meantime, my transmission needed to be replaced and I discovered that the car in under warranty. The powertrain warranty covers engine mounts. Ed Voyles Honda was prepared to charge me $4570 for my transmission even though it was under warranty. They said they were too busy to run the VIN for every vehicle through their system to see whether or not it was under warranty. Had I not forced them to investigate further, they would have gladly taken my money.
I called Honda care and the representative told me to take my repair order back to the dealership and get a refund. When I spoke to the service manager, Greg Gibbons, he told me that even though he charged me $335 for the engine mount, Honda would only reimburse $120. He said that he would split the difference and refund me $265. He told me that he would not refund me the entire amount. He said it was my responsibility to know whether or not the repair was covered under warranty or not and inform him before the repair is done.
I called Honda care back and told them what happened. They told me that they would speak to Greg and investigate and call me back. The Honda care representative told me that I should not have to pay anything on something that is covered by warranty. I went to the Honda service center and had a Honda warranty and therefore I should have no out of pocket costs. They also told me that it is the service center's responsibility to run the VIN number on every vehicle they repair to determine if it has an active warranty. It is clear to me that this dealership doesn't want to know if a repair is covered under warranty. Instead they just want to collect the money from the customer, because they can charge the customer more than what American Honda sets as the value of the repair.
