Anthony Moya, who has a long history of fraud, is running a vanity art gallery called Effeleven Gallery in the River North area of Chicago. He is a known scam artist from his prior career as a fashion photographer. There are scads of reports on the internet about his history of fraud and poor business practices.
He is at it again. He rents wall space to painters and artists for a fee and charged commission if he sells their art work. His business practices are fraudulent. He has not been paying the commissions to the artist who sell their work. He accepts fees for rental space that he does not have. He has not paid his employees and was evicted his original gallery space on Institute Place for failure to pay rent. He is now not paying rent at his current gallery.
If you purchase art here, be aware the artist will not get paid or will have to threaten to sue him to get any money. If you display art - beware that you will be ripped off and not paid if your work sells. Very little artwork sells - he is just interested in the fees from wall space. He does nothing to promote your work to buyers.
He has a long history of business fraud. (Primia Facie, Redvalet photography, Earbound Magazine, BHIP style, MODEX Photo expo rip off described on MUSEcube, evictions from several past studios, lawsuits from employees who were never paid).
Beware

#2 Consumer Comment
Moya, Scam Artist or REALLY Bad Businessman?

I have dealt with Mr Moya in the past. Fact is he still owes me money but I am glad to be rid of him and consider it money well spent if I never see or hear from him again
He does have a VERY bad rep. His so called "Fashion Photography" biz was a sham, all he ever did was dupe poor girls into thinking that he was going to make them models. Truth is he did do a few protfolios for Elite but failed to deliver photos. His "event" Modex? First he pocketed all the money made from print sales (I know personally he got paid over $1,000) and paid none of it to the photographers who did the work. Second, None, I repeat NONE of the models ever got any of the photos were suppose to get on CD
Hi "Magazine" Prima Facia, was not anything of the sort, please do yourself a favor and read what other have posted here about it
As a matter of record, go to the web site of the Cook County Clerk of the Curcuit court http://198.173.15.34/ on the left side go to Online Case Info and click on Full Docket Search
Under Search by Name type in Effe Leven and you will find case number 2008-M1-711185 for $16897.97
Search for Anthony Moya and 7 cases come up (one of which is the case above)
2004-M1-188450 - $3010.00
2003-M1-158588 - $1300.14
2002-M3-002689 - $7611.42
2001-M1-116704 - $39081.95
1996-M3-003265 - $1580.01
1993-M3-002500 - $9976.68
a total of $79,458.17
and from what I saw once but cannot find the documentation for, is that he was sued by a group in California for over $30,000 regarding a Search Engine web site he was involved with
so maybe he's not a scam artist or maybe he's not, but with just shy of $80,000 in verified law suits against him, he is definately NOT someone you want to do business with
oh and rumor had it that there were more then a few models saying that he tried to have sex with them, that may or may not be ture. But his wife did divorce him case # 2008D010191 I'm guessing she got tired of his 'business"

misleading and a distortion of the facts !

Dear Mr./Mrs. Angel,
I have no idea what happened at the previous company, but I know what was going on at Effe Leven Gallery because I used to work there, and I am an artist who still exhibits there as well. With your post, you really hurt all the artists that are exhibiting at Effe Leven Gallery! ( and all the other potential Chicago based artists who are in need of a space to exhibit their works)
First of all it looks like you have no connection with the art world. I think that is apparent by calling us artists (we can be painters, sculptors) artists and painters are the same thing!
- Second, I don't know any gallery that DOES NOT charge commission if they sell our work.
- HE USED TO RENT WALL SPACE and here was his only mistake! He tried to help emerging artists to get promoted in the River North area. In order to survive there and be able to pay rent he had to do that. And the artist that chose to pay rent for the wall space did so by their own choice because they wanted an opportunity to exhibit in a River North gallery. No one forced them to rent the wall space. THE GALLERY NEVER RENTED WALL SPACE THAT WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
- The gallery is NOT charging wall space anymore. Go and take a look now at the high end quality work that is displayed in the gallery!
Since I worked there, I know exactly if the employees were paid or not! In a struggling economy, Mr. Anthony tried to keep us working there even though there was no cash coming in the gallery. It is true that it was a moment when he couldn't pay us, because it was more important to pay the rent and save the gallery. But, he paid us back every cent that he had to. The artists were paid as well!
So, Mr/Mrs Angel, if you don't know the true facts please make something good to this society, and leave us the artists doing what we know to do the best, and that is "Creating Magic" for you !
Artists, and buyers I can guarantee that the facts that were posted by Mr./ Mrs Angel are misleading and a distortion of the facts !
Regards,
Adriana
