I was treated like a common criminal today, never have I been more insulted! I visited the El Super San Fernando market today (Thursday August 11, 2017). The woman in line before me had done two separate transactions. First one being a credit card transactions and the second with WIC. She had her credit card out and ID out she tried to hand the checker her ID he motioned no never looked at the ID and only told her to swipe her card card. Upon completing that transaction she then begins the second transaction with her WIC folder. She hands the checker two WIC checks and again he never saw the folder to verify the signature on the checks matched the signature on the outside of the WIC folder. The woman finishes her transactions and takes her two carts that were filled to the limit and leaves. It was bizarre because one two carts full and never was her information verified, did the checker bat an eye... nothing!
I purchased some meat, olive oil, two gallons of milk, and a roll of paper towels I had all of five items was rang up and my total was $17 and some change. I gave the worker a $20 bill only for the check stand worker who was a young man was no more that 21 years old stood there for nearly 5 minutes examining the $20 bill! By all means if the bill looked strange He could have pulled out a counterfeit pen swiped it with the pen quickly and been done with his suspicions. Rather he stood there held the bill out in front of him at arms length and looks at it with his head cocked to the side at stared at it then holds it up over his head to hold it up to the light then puts it down and scratches the bill and the counterfeit strip, which might I add is a federal offense to peel or scratch that strip in anyway. Then holds it up again and then finally decides to type in $20.00 difference against the $17 total. I stood there in disbelief my husband was in disbelief and we just said aloud are you kidding me?!? He stood there laughing and with a smug look on his face as if he enjoyed that whole exchange. I feel like I was discriminated against and targeted.
I was LIVID!!! & humiliated That the checker would even insinuate in anyway that I counterfeited this $20. I immediately walked over to speak to a manager. I spoke to a manger who then basically condones that behavior and states that they do random checks which is a load of crap because I was at the market the day before (Wednesday August 10, 2017). Wednesday is one of the busiest days me and my mother were in line for an hour just to check out and during that time I did not see not one checker examine $ on that manner or do these supposed random checks as the manager stated. Furthermore I would LOVE to know what the basis is on these supposed "random checks" and lastly corporate Giants such as Walmart have that posted upon entering their store that you may be subjected to random checks. On the outside of your store I was NEVER warned of such so that definitely is invading my privacy. Personally I would think it'd be easiest to commit fraud with the person who was before me with the credit card and WIC transaction and two carts filled to the limit. That to me would be a red flag it appears as someone who wants to get the most use of the card before it's reported as stolen. But again that would never have been verified being that NONE of her information was verified instead I was treated like a criminal with five items and a $20 bill!! Never have i been more mortified, insulted, and felt discriminated against in my life! And for the manager to condone such behavior is just beyond me and to have zero explanation for such is ridiculous!
As I told the owner any educated person can google such it is public information $20 bills and up are obvious bills that are counterfeited and with the new security strips on such bills it is almost impossible to counterfeit such bills so the now most common bills that are counterfeited are $1, $5, and $10 being that those are on old treasury paper and prints. I personally defended this market against defamatory articles and demonstrations outside the market and walked across picket lines from disgruntled workers and continued to shop in this market against all the naysayers and today I join them and will NEVER return to this market after being treated in such a disgusting discriminatory manner.
