I had a repeating customer on Elance. They used to pay a few 1000s of dollars on Elance for multiple projects on Elance. Then once he said, his paypal account was hacked and after a very few days, Elance billing emailed me that they have debitted my account because that paypal account holder created a dispute on paypal and asked for refund, where my customer says he doesn't know anything about it.

The customer didn't pay me the same amount again because he wanted to verify it first with paypal and paypal doesn't take an action, they said they are investigating and passed months and months.

so I have lost a lot of dollars.

Then today again, Elance debitted my account and provided the same reason. The customer is unable to pay as he hasn't got any result from his paypal account.

Elance policy is that, they take the money immediately from our account no matter, where the money is going??? Elance dont tell me anything about my money just keep taking it out.

For this reason, I had to take the customer out of Elance and now he is paying me outside Elance for other new projects we are working for him. I know this might be against Elance policy, but this is what I had done as I can't afford to keep losing the money.

The thing is I am now completely scared that the paypal will keep asking Elance to refund and Elance will be sending them money from my account for no reason.

Elance wont tell me anything as to where is my money why they keep taking it out of my account. Money in elance escrows supposed to be safe but it is not. Elance send it to you and then take it back whenever they want to

Once a dispute is filed with PayPal

Elance had no choice but to retrieve the funds. Why it is taking PayPal months to investigate I'm not sure. You state PayPal account was hacked into. Identity theft may be causing the long delay in the investigation. It's hard to catch online hackers.

PayPal accounts have to be protected like any other account being used on the internet.

My suggestion: ask the payee to only use a credit card when using PayPal. It's much easier to retrieve funds from credit card company although that often takes up to 3 months as well.

Sounds like you've experienced a major inconvenience. Unfortunately it seems the hackers are the ones who caused it.
