it has been three years since they did my mother (and me) wrong, but it still bothers me, so here goes:  she was moving from vegas to atlanta, and got several quotes, and the slick saleman they used gained my mother's confidence.  he quoted 3000, and this number was put onto a form and i told my mom to make sure that was the firm number, not a quote or estimate.  he assured her it was a "solid" number.  then they did their thing:

they packed up her one bedroom condo, gave her a date and then proceeded to hold our stuff hostage and doubled their number and insisted on getting paid first before delivering.  among the bullshit they said was:  "our estimate was based on poundage, but we charge by cubic feet."

what could we do:  we agreed to pay the ransom.  they delivered, and i was sure i was there.  when they unloaded her stuff, i measure the cubic feet of the empy part of the big van they used:  the volume of stuff was half of what they said they were charging us for.  the volume was actually true to the original 3000 dollar estimate!!

then, we discovered that three boxes of books were missing, two mirrors were missing, things we broken (including a family heirloom oil painting that was wrapped with a sharp iron CD holder and the painting was torn.)  other stuff was destroyed...i don't remember the extent of the damage.  the "insurance" was worthless, and they delayed the claims for 90 days until the limits of the insurance expired.

it was a horrible experience, a blatent example of them taking advantage of someone, in this case an old lady without any recourse.  DON'T USE THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, THEY ARE CRIMINALS.

I'm so sorry

AUTHOR: Leann - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 09, 2010

I'm so sorry you had such a bad move with Elite.  I do not work for Elite and never have.  I have worked for a major moving company (one of the trucks you actually see on the road).  First of all, always be sure to go with a reputable company.  If you don't see the trucks on the road, be aware.  Your mother moved across the country and in my experience $3000 sounds a little on the cheap side even though she only had a one bedroom condo.  You mentioned they packed as well and that adds up.  Usually companies will give you an estimate.  Unless you get a binding estimate, you will have to pay the charges based on what the shipment weighs.  Insurance is another ballgame.  In order for your belongings to be covered, you need to purchase additional insurance.  All a moving company is required to pay by law is $.60 per pound per article.  Another reality for you to take into consideration is that it is common practice for a moving company to require payment before delivering the shipment.  Same would hold true for delivery out of storage.  Payment would have to be made up front.  Otherwise the moving company could get screwed out of money that is owed to them.  Pertaining to your missing items, in my experience, it was customary for a claim to be filed within a 9 month period, not 90 days for an interstate move.  It has been too long now for you to persue that but that is something to remember when moving anyone else in the future.  My bottom line is please do your research and stick with the reputable moving companies.
