Eric Mellem, Debt Verification Department Unknown SCAM SNAIL MAIL Irvine, California

I have received a scam letter from this company saying my current balances are $35,200 and that my credit card balance renegotiation of $14,080 has not been verified.  The letter states that I must call their underwriting department immediately.  I don't owe anything on credit cards (and verified that I wasn't a victim of ID theft by placing a quick call the the credit reporting agencies).  It made me nervous, however, that this company got my name/address information.  I reported this company and made complaints to the FTC and the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Postmaster General.  The Postmaster General investigator I spoke with confirmed that this is absolutely a scam by Eric Mellem and this debt verification "company" and other various companies.  He said it is widespread and they are getting numerous complaints every day of people getting scammed out of money or outright identity theft once they get your actual information (for people who are unfortunate enough to call them and think it's legitimate).  He said that they get your name from legitimate magazine subscription or other mailing lists that get sold and target various zip codes at a time.  He advised to either do nothing and once customers realize it's a scam and don't "bite" they'll stop.  Or to make a copy of the letter and say "REMOVE FROM LIST - DO NOT OWE" or something of the like.  To me, it's not worth even the .41 cents to mail it back.
