I came across ESI Careers while searching websites. I had come across a few career counseling firms and talking to them I found their services extremely expensive, especially for what they did. I looked into ESI careers only because they were local and I could visit them.

I make contact and met with the president, Herb Theune, who goes on talking where he has been and what he has done. Chats a bit about what I want and where I want to go in my career. Then he says he can help, there are proven techniques that they use that would help me out but to do that we need to have another meeting that would include my spouse for commitment purposes. I accepted and set up a meeting for a week later.

My wife and I met with Mr. Theune and he goes over their plan and what they do, that how different they are from various executive search firms and so on. The plan indicated quite a few things they would do and specifically the network they have established that they would reach out to as part of their service. It was also mentioned that my network would also be used; however, they would be the ones making the connections and never I would have to make cold calls.

Well, I signed up mainly due to curiousity and the fact that their fee seemed reasonable compared to others I had spoken with. Over the few weeks I met with the only individual who helps out and were given loads of paperwork, samples of other people's resumes and were dictated on what I am to do within set timelines. I went along with it hoping something would happen until a point where I contacted other firms and were told I was waisting my time with them because even the resume they directed me to write was a format that none of the recruiting firms would accept (this was a fact as every agency I sent it to asked me if I had a different resume). Overall, after a month when I was asked to start calling people within my network and asking them to provide leads where they work, I decided to speak up and refused to follow what I was being told. I have gone back and forth to get a refund but was told they can not put a piecemeal cost to what they do and therefore cannot offer a refund.

I have done better on my own with my own company but have been looking for a way to get a refund and let others know to run away from such services claimimg they can help. I am not saying every career copunseling firm is the same but this one for sure is a scam. Please stay away from ESI careers; not worth your time; you can do better on your own paying some resume expert to write your resume and start working with a few recruiters to get what you deserve.
