We hired this moving company to move us from California to Wisconsin. This move included packing our belongings. We were quoted a price of $3,148.00 The final cost was 8,614.00 after packing and loading our belongings. We told them when we needed our belongings to arrive (2/14/08), which they assured us would be no problem. We then had to change our move date to a week earlier (2/3/08)to insure it would be there on the date requested. The truck did not leave California until 2/13/08. I arrived in Wisconsin on 2/13. The truck did not arrive until 2/18. Our belongings where not unloaded until 2/20, due to Expedient's refusal to unload without final payment in full in cash. Which we understand is against the law. They would not accept any other form of payment. This company arrived to pack and load with out the necessary supplies and boxes. Our belongings were broken, damaged, lost, improperly packed, for example our clothes where not hung in wardrobe boxes they were stuffed into the boxes, fragile items stuffed into boxes, open containers of spices and condiments were packed unsealed. The items missing are irreplaceable. Without exaggeration there is not one thing that has not in some way or another been damaged, broken, destroyed or lost by this company Our claim to them is for $7,110.00.

Because Expedient did not arrive on the date promised we were forced to sleep on the floor. We had to purchase items to cook, eat and bathe with. In addition we now have the task of trying to replace or fix the items lost, destroyed or broken by this company. We hired this company in good faith, we put our trust in this company. All we received in return was a nightmare, lies and a bill for $7,000.00+ for very poor service.

We submitted a claim for $7,110.00, Expedients offer of settlement was $292.80. In reality over 90% of our belongings were either lost, destroyed or damaged in some way. The original quote was $3,148.00, after packing and loading, the final cost was $8,614.00. Expedient would not unload or allow us to inspect our belongings until the balance was paid in full, in cash. They would not accept any other form of payment. Expedient arrived 5 days late, after we where told more than once our belongings would arrive on the date requested. In addition, some of the items lost cannot be replaced, nor can Expedient tell us what happened to those items, they were listed on the inventory sheet, but were not unload at the destination.

We would like Expedient to compensate us for what was lost, destroyed and damaged by their incompetence. As stated 90% of our belongings were affected by their handling. Our claim of $7,110.00 is a fair amount versus what was actually lost or damaged.

It Won't Happen

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 08, 2008

First of all, you contracted with a less than reputable moving company. Having said that, I wonder how much research you did? For instance, the San Fernando Valley is where many scam movers are located (not just Canoga Park, but Chatsworth as well); the only way a shipper can be assured their items will arrive safely without it costing you more than what you were quoted was to go with one of the major moving companies. If you had done any research on these movers, you would never had chosen them.

Next, toss your claim of $7K and accept the $292.80 because that's all you're going to get. The problem you have is that in your contract, you signed up for $0.60/pound valuation. That means the moving company is only required to reimburse you for the claim at $0.60 per pound for each individual item broken. For example, a 6lb. dining room chair completely destroyed will net you $3.60.

It might have cost you several hundred dollars. $3.60 is all you would get. Moreover, you can't take them to court for it because of legal protections the moving company has - specifically the Carmack Amendment. Your case would be dismissed and the mover knows this. A reputable mover would have at least offered you what in the industry is called Full Replacement Valuation, which might have netted you at least one-half to 2/3 of what your losses truly were.

Going with the cheapest mover is NEVER a good idea. Let me illustrate. Using one of the major moving companies, I suspect you would have been quoted a price of $7,000 or so to do the move and that price (if you received a Guarantee Not-to-Exceed quote) would have been no more than $7000. You probably would have had little to no damage and little to nothing to claim. This move in the end cost you not only the $8600 for the move, but destruction and loss to your property of more than $7100, for a total cost to you of $15,700. In the end, this move cost you more than double what it would have had you gone with a reputable mover.

Bottom line: Moving is not an inexpensive venture and you found out the hard way what happens when you choose a less than reputable mover. Moving will always cost more than you think it should and using a professional mover less so. Consumers need to be focused not on the cheapest price, but what will yield them the greatest value. I think you can see the more expensive and professional mover would have yielded you the better value.
