I had a very similar experience. I purchased my La Germania (registered trademark owned by Bertazzoni) freestanding duel fuel range early 2003 from Explorer Appliance Corporation.

After working for about a year, the oven portion suddenly broke. I've tried in vain since December of 2004 to get the oven fixed. There is absolutely no service or support for this product. It's entirely frustrating to spend $3200 for an oven that essentially is a piece of crap when, for not considerably more, you could buy a (competitor's name deleted) that is not only a reputable company but also supports the products they sell.
Thermadore (of Purcell Mury) now distributes Bertazzoni freestanding ranges. I think it's a HUGE mistake that they are going to distribute these low quality appliances. And consumers beware, these ovens will break. Do NOT buy an Italian manufactured oven. It's not worth the $1000 savings, you're time and sanity are worth much more.
On a side note Rae, I too bought my oven from Bruce Beerup at thenaturalhome.com You pay for it through his site and receive the product from Explorer Appliance Corporation in San Diego. (It's so convoluted. The who distribution, wholesale, retail chain of this product. It's a maze of confusion.)
Bruce Beerup knows he is selling oven/ranges that just do not work yet he continues to do so. It's simply wrong and he should be just as responsible.
I am reluctant to to sue them in small claims court just because of the time involved. I'm kind of ready to cut my losses. Seeing your report has reignited a fire in me. I might just proceed with a suit. Thanks for the information you've reported and I hope my report prevents someone from making the same mistake we did.
