They called me on Monday May 24, 2010 at 9:59 AM CST saying that I should give them a call back once I get the message. I called back at 11:45 AM CST. I was told that the mechanic I left the car with had to be rushed to the hospital due to a finger accident and that they had "fixed" whatever they thought was wrong with her a/c to the tune of $234.85 (they didn't wait for my approval). I called back at 11:52AM asking for an explanation of my bill, apparently there had been some wiring issue and just looking at an a/c they needed to recharge my a/c which was $110 (which they didnt tell me when I dropped off the car) then they fixed the ground wire issue plus workmanship was $80.00 and then of course the oil and filter change that I came in for was $28.00.
Well, I went to pick it on (Monday May 24, 2010), the car wouldn't start. They "fixed" it again. It started. Before I left I asked the man who worked on the car are you sure this car is going to work and not leave me stranded somewhere? He said no, the car is fine.
So I felt for Hyde Park. On Lake Shore drive, I turned the a/c within 10mins it smelled like there was something burning. I turned the a/c off. I got to where I was going, I parked the car. Three and half hours later I got in the car to leave and go back to Rogers park with the intentions of taking the car back to Fair Mufflers, I turned the car on and the a/c on and asked my passenger if she smelled something burning. Just to make sure I wasnt paranoid. Within 3mins of the car being on, it partially exploded. Smoke was coming from the exhaust as well as from under the hood of the car. The burning smell was back in the car and the ABS light came on. $90 and 4 hours later the car was towed back up north and parked at the mechanic.
I talked to the mechanic the next day. The garage said the compressor had exploded. They can't fix it unless I buy a compressor ($241.00) for them to install and they will not reimburse me for the tow truck because it is my fault my car's compressor is old and exploded. They also would not refund my money because the mechanic did everything according to book and yes they fixed the a/c problem without consulting me but that didnt seem to be a big deal. There was nothing that could be done.
Angrily, I picked up the car on Tuesday; the driver door wouldnt open to which the mechanic fixed. As I was driving out of their lot my brake and ABS light came on. Even after I have floored the brakes, it still takes at least 30 secs until the car comes to a complete stop.
So now my car that I took in for a oil change is completely un-drivable. I have not told the garage about the brakes not working because there is nothing they seem willing to do for me and I refuse to give them more money.
Fair Mufflers on Western and Lunt, is like a bad car insurance company, they work great if you don't have any major problems then all of a sudden you become a nuisance when there is a problem.
