Fairfax County, Virginia DMV Keeps trying to collect taxes that have been paid Fairfax Virginia

My husband and I moved from Virginia to Georgia at the end of October, 2014. We registered our vehicles in Georgia and paid the taxes.

We received notice from the Fairfax County, Virginia DMV that we owed a year's taxes on the vehicles. Fairfax County claims they charge their taxes in arrears and that we owed for 2014. We got nowhere arguing with them, so they sent our bill to a collection agency. Rather than have our credit rating ruined, we paid the amount owed for one vehicle and intended to pay the other vehicle the following month. We're retired, living on a fixed income and this is all we could do within our budget.

My husband and I filed our taxes and were due a refund from Virginia. We requested that the refund be direct deposited. Instead we received a check with a letter stating that what we owed the Fairfax County DMV had been deducted. This was the entire amount excluding what we had paid to the collection agency.

Before we took the time to go through all the paperwork, we received a check from the Virginia Department of Taxation for the overpayment. We called the Fairfax County DMV and was told that we were square. Unfortunately, we did not write down the name of the clerk that told us this.

The second week of April, we received another small check (plus interest) from the Department of Taxation. Less than 5 days after we got that check, we got a tax bill from the  Fairfax County DMV stating we were delinquent on our payment of one of the vehicles.

I wrote to Julia Leedy at the Virginia DMV explaining the situation. I never received a response.

Any day now, we're expecting some kind of threat from the DMV or a notice from a collection agency.
