In November 2016, a few days after my father's sudden death, Farm Bureau of Mississippi cancelled my parents' auto insurance policy, which they had for 48 years, since 1968. So, in the midst of her grief over the death of her husband of 66 years, and the major headache of making funeral arrangements, etc., she had to deal with the stress of having no car insurance.

Calls to the local agency yielded only one response:  "cancellation due to change of circumstances". Letters to the central office and its President, Mike McCormick, elicited no response whatsoever.

When I pressed them for an answer, they told me to "make an appointment to come in and talk to an agent". I told them that I better not come in person because, if I did, I might wind up visiting my wrath on their persons.

I can only believe that, having collected tens of thousands of dollars in premiums over the years, they decided to cut their losses and leave my mother high and dry.

Utterly despicable behavior.

We have since arranged better coverage at a lower price from another company, Shelter, and I have cancelled all my policies with them. (And to add insult to injury, they continue to send me a bill for 50 cents! for the cancelled policies.)

Just to clarify re your quesions:

Yes, they were/are both in their mid-80s. My Dad's stroke came on suddenly without warning while he was driving a tractor and trying to pretend he was still 20. My mother is stronger and more energetic than I am, 30 years her junior. She belongs to 5 civic clubs, volunteers at 2 charity service organizations, and drives to visit her grandchildren 100 miles away almost weekly. She just got back from a trip with her "girlfriend" to California (they are the same age, and drove!). My parents were both drivers, with two vehicles. My Dad was the most precise and exacting driver I've ever encountered-- he drove at precisely the speed limit (kind of annoying), he never drifted, he signaled incessantly-- all from his engineering background, I expect. (I, on the other hand, regard the lane stripes on the highway as merely suggestions.)

This is a small town. Their agent at FB had known them for many years and was well aware of my father's death almost immediately (they were both Masons). My father always said that this guy was "one brick short a load" (i.e., not very bright), so maybe this was the agent's revenge. Clearly, if their record had been horrible, their new Shelter agent would not have so readily and quickly arranged for comprehensive coverage on both vehicles.

Of course, over 48 years they had made claims, but those were mainly during our teenage years, when, between my brother and me, we wrecked our dad's cars roughly ever other year. Recently, my mom had a little fender-bender, maybe $500 worth, so no outrageous claims had been made to my knowledge.

Note that my chief complaint is that we cold get NO ONE to respond by phone (no return calls from voicemail, "unavailable" from receptionists, no callbacks from the-- or any-- local agent) or to my letters. Either this company is radically incompetent or grossly unethical. But then, some say many insurance companies are like that.

I guess I say "cut losses" because insurance companies see older drivers as high risk. I'm speculating that this was merely an excuse to get rid of this policy. My mom is a feisty Southern "steel magnolia" and I'm confident would have marched into the FB office to give them a piece of her mind, but of course, at that time, she was not up to it. "Growing old," as Bette Davis once said, "ain't for sissies."What FB will probably learn soon is that she is immensely well-known and popular in this town and, as word gets around, I expect Shelter (and others) will see a lot of new customers.

Mystery

I first just want to say Wow. 66 years of marriage, that in itself is a feat. Even if they married young this puts both your mom and dad at over 80 years old, and apparently both were still driving. What ever their lifestyle was, more power to her. But there is a bit of a mystery here.

Just how did this company find out about this "change in circumstances" within a few days of your father passing?  Did they just happen to guess or did someone contact them? If someone contacted them it could be that the way the policy was written they had to cancel the entire thing.

Then you give the reason that they cancelled the policy was to "cut their losses". What losses? Did your parents make any claims against them? Were there pending claims? Did lossing your father make your mom a higher risk? As unless there is something you aren't saying it sounds like the only thing they lost is the steady income from your parents premiums.

Odds are....

Odds are that the insurance was in your fathers name. What this means is THEY CANNOT INSURE A DEAD PERSON!!! So the policy is cancelled. This is NOT a ripoff. This is just YOU being a VERY bitter person!! We get it, a parent has died, but that doesnt mean THEY are ripping YOU off!!! It is what it is. The laws THEY have to follow perclude insuring a DEAD PERSON!!! So while in the midst of your grief YOU get upsetting news and IMMEDIATLY assume that its a ripoff. thankfully THEY have a legal remedy if THEY chose. What YOU have done is defamation pure and simple. YOU should be ashamed of yourself for attempting to cause THEM grief because YOU are suffering. It doesnt matter IF your mother was on the insurance as a secondary driver, your father was the PRIMARY!! How is this difficult to understand?? Good for you getting a cheaper rate, it STILL doesnt make what happend a ripoff. Its just ONE of the MANY issues that must be dealt with when someone passes away.
