I am a 20 year old female and drive a 2009 toyota corolla.  I began going to firestone for two reasons, the first of which being that it was open on sundays, my only free day, and the second being that it was less than two miles away from my house.  I was in a crunch and needed to get my oil changed before going out of town, so i went to Firestone Mall of Georgia.  The Manager, Joe, assisted me there.  I informed him that I needed an oil change and that was all.  After bringing my car in, they checked the alignment and other aspects of the car as expected, and then he came back in and told me that my battery needed to be replaced, i needed a new air filter, i needed an alignment, and my brakes needed to be flushed.  



I agreed to having the air filter replaced and my brakes flushed simply because the expense was not too much, and I would rather be safe than sorry.  However, my battery was a completely different issue.  The car was less than two years old, the headlights have never stayed on over night, and I have never had any problems with the battery.  This was also a $100 expense, and being a college student, I did not have the money.  I declined that service, but kept the paperwork in case something did go wrong.



I went back to firestone recently to get my oil changed and to purchase their lifetime alignment service.  While there, Katie informed me that I needed new brakes and my rotors needed to be replaced.  Also, somehow, my battery magically regained life, as it was not rough to my attention that it needed to be replaced.  In fact, i asked to look at a copy of the battery report and it came out "marginal" and not needing to be replaced. But back to the brakes. Now, I may be young and I might be female, but Im not stupid when it comes to cars.  The brakes had not been squeaking or grinding or anything of that sort to indicate that they needed to be replaced.  Not to mention the fact that when I had visited that same store a month previous to get an oil change, no indication was made that my brakes were low. She wrote up a quote for the parts and labor for replacement of both and it totaled $430! Seriously? over $400 on my tiny little car? It cost the exact same amount for a grand caravan on which the parts are much larger.  I declined this service as well and got a second opinion from a different mechanic.



Shannon from Suburban Tire Co. Quoted me $235 for the same exact service.  That is when I knew i was being ripped off.  He also said that he did not believe that my rotors would need to be replaced since the car was still fairly new.  When I had the service done on my car he told me "Whoever told you that you needed your rotors replaced was simply trying to make money off of you, they were not bad, and they did not even need to be rotated."



My total came to $130.  that is $300 less than what Firestone wanted to charge me.  I will not be taking my car back to Firestone, even though I have the lifetime alignment at their facility.  I will not continue to take my vehicle to a facility where I cannot trust the people.  I would not recommend anyone go to this Firestone, or any firestone for that matter.  I will be taking my car to Sxxxx Tire Co.  (((REDACTED))) at Discover Mills from now on.

So correct, I was clearly implicating that this was more then overselling. I understand the literal definition of upselling is for example like offering to super size a meal, or add fries etc.

So perhaps that is not the most accurate literal term, I can concede that. What the rip off is whatever you wish to term it, is performing diagnostics or services that are not necessary, or charging for diagnostics and/or services that were not actually performed.

If anyone does not believe this happens, you would have to be living in a cave with no means to news or media. There have been plenty of sting operations using hidden cameras catching these kind of tactics in action. So imagine how much this happens when there is not a hidden camera and it is not caught on tape?

However, I would agree in this case there are also signs of "overselling" which is perhaps nothing more then a less harsh way of saying... RIP OFF.

upsells are only unethical when they try to upsell something not needed---in this case---was there a reason this firestone recommended new rotors and the other place sais there fine??--for example--the rotors may have been blued or heatglazed and according to the books-need to be replaced----did the other place test drive the car for pulsation??---she also says her brakes did not squeal so they didn't need to be replaced--do you know how many people were if your just replace the pads they get that tiny little squeak at 2 mph while reversing--and they bring the car back to you like something is wrong only 1 month after putting the brakes on???--it is just noise people!!!---how many times(when i worked at firestone)-have i cut someones rotors and changed the pads and they still come back 2 weeks later for a 2 mph sqeuk and had to re do the job just so they don't have to hear the squeak---was anything wrong-no!!!!!!!-so not all squeaks are because the car needs brakes!!!!!----in any case--it is hard to tell if this was a rip off due to lack of info--it seems as though this girl is more just pissed off that they told her of the cost of basic maintenance(if she cant do it herself)---again--how hard is it to ask why? or can you see for yourself?--any honest shop will show you and why they recommended it---you don't like the cost--do the simple maintenance yourself!!!--a brake flush--all you need to di is suck the fluid out of the reservoir--you can buy a turkey baster and suck it out and replace it with new fluid--same with power steering--coolant is different and usually has a drain plug at the bottom of the radiator-some even have drain plugs on the engine block for coolant!!!--with all due respect to the 20 year old girl driving the corolla-this is not a ripoff report and you still have more learning to do about cars--this does not mean you cannot learn and i believe you can

sorry ronny g but i disagree--that was a ryhmm--anyway--you change your engine oil, correct??---why not chnage the power steering oil/fluid---the brake fluid--the coolant--the transmission fluid(on most cars with the regular red fluid)--changing the fluids regularly keeps the system from corroding--it also corrodes seals causing leaks---is this anything complicated for some-no----the brake fluid all you do really is just suck it out of the resevoir and put new fluid in--power stering the same except you run the engine a couple times and let the new fluid cycle--suck it out till it looks clean!!---the fuel injection service is alright---i wouldn't recommend it a lot though---the fuel injection cleaner is good s**t though-the same you put in the gas tank--also i would suggest every so often cleaning some electrical connections--there is a good spray for that--but clean the MAS and other sensors----the best tip of all--drive it down the highway at 85-90 whenever possible--you should see the amount of cars i deal with day to day that don't like there owners--sometimes i feel bad for the car but then the car is usually pissed off being that the same owner keep driving it--and the car then gives me an attitude--then it's like f**k you man--it's your owner that is the idiot and does everything cheap---at least when working on cars if they piss you off you can just swear at them-in any case--change your fluids--even the gm 100k coolant---the coolant is very corrosive and can leak from hose connections and things--i also recommend using the same fluid that came out of the car meaning don't mix the fluids--for example my car has a intresting blue green color to it--so i will only get dealer coolant---my power steering fluid is red or AKA "TRANSMISSION FLUID"--i only use that--don't mix the red with the gold fluids--it makes the fluid look dirty---keep your cars alive!!!!!!

upselling vs overselling

Upselling is common in all businesses. Restaurants do it. Department stores do it. Everyone does it. It's perfectly normal. Buy dinner, the waiter recommends wine. Buy a suit, the sales clerk recommends a tie, or new shoes. Get an oil change, how about replacing the dirty air filter at the same time.  

Overselling is unethical, and is what you are referring to Ronny. Overselling is the practice of conning the customer into buying something that is not needed. Calipers or wheel cylinders that have no actual problems, filters that are not dirty, belts that are not glazed or cracked, etc.

Yep. rip off, taking advantage..you name it..they do it.

It is nice to see a 20 year old that was smart enough to know better. There is report after report  of people here paying for things like "fuel injection service", "Tranny flush", brake flush and other services that are not even in the owners manual of the vehicle for scheduled maintenance. ...all a rip off.

Not to say it is beyond possibility your battery is not up to specs..but does your car start in the morning? If so..it is good. When your battery is no longer good, you will be the first to know.
