On April 2, 2008 a First American Van Lines moving truck (out of Brooklyn, New York) holding the belongings of 5 families caught fire in Burlington, North Carolina. The time of this tragedy was 2:15 p.m. between the Maple Avenue and Alamance Road exits on Interstate 85/40. Some of the customers had only ashes to claim while others waited to see the aftermath. According to Thetimenews.com it was reported that the brakes malfunction. This fire caused some to lose almost everything.

Mrs.Wilhelmenia Robinson, a 68 year old retired worker from New York City who was among those who were having her items delivered from New York to Virginia, Greensboro and Wilmington, North Carolina and as a far as Florida.

She was told by a First American Van Lines representative that her items suffered smoke and water damage. Prior to the First American Van Lines truck arriving a representative was still asking for a full payment. Then the payment was reduce and later dismissed.

But, the ultimate tragedy came on Monday-Tuesday when the First American Van Lines moving company offered her a little more than $6,700 for her belonging that were destroyed. She had given them over $2,000 in NewYork. Mrs. Robinson had 2 items on the truck that cost that amount. Her 3 bedroom apartment and all of her treasured belongings were on the truck. The offer was an insult and disgraceful. They made it seem like they were doing her a favor. The law that states that they can pay this amount and get away with destroying a person life need to be changed. Mrs. Robinson is devastated and needs help ASAP.
