This may seem very unusual, as I was not ripped off for money but for something very important to me. It is called time.

I am a lifelong diabetic & been in a wheelchair for two years from a fall. My ankle was seriously broken in two places. My doctors finally said I could start walking with the aid of brace & walker.

I obtained my brace through medicare, then was taken to First Choice Medical Supply to obtain my walker. I gave them the prescription. This was to be done through Medicare/Medical. I thought all was understood, & was told they would contact me as soon as it was approved.

After almost three months, First Choice was contacted & I was told they could not do anything. They knew medicare would not pay for it & they were unable to work with Medi-Cal right now. I also called a couple of times and told not to worry that they would contact me when they heard anything.

In essence, they couldn't find my file & they had done nothing. I do not feel that disabled persons should not be treated as second class citizens or even less than that. That wasted time was very valuable to me.

I am an employee of First Choice and have been for 10 years. I can not recall a paitent that we have never attempted to help get thier equipment approved, especially for mobility products.

However as far as the wait is concerned yes Medicare would need to deny the item with an appropriate denial code we then require documentation and questionaire forms from the physician to justify why the patient would need both a wheelchair and a walker just to submit to Medi-Cal to consider the purchase and in turn Medi-Cal will require a Treatment of Authorization Request that is anywhere from 6-8 weeks for just a response; not only is this depending on the MD to complete the paper work in a timely maner but get all of the required documentation submitted together.

A response that a file can not be found is not the answer any customer should receive because the patients information will be in the computer along with the claim if we were the provider of service. This should have been directed to a Manager to assure that the appropriate steps were taken to obtain the information needed to process this order for the patient.

Our goal is to give quality patient care and service! We would be more than willing to help any patient obtain the equipment they need with as little hassel as possible.
