I opened an account with Newport News in 1998 and had a credit limit of $600.00. I took out on credit this amount to establish credit. I never purchased over my amount. We have been struggling to pay this debt off for 11 years. FCNB won't work with us after repeatedly asking them to lower out interest rate. My interest rate is 27.60. Through fees, late charges, over charges and whatever I now owe $1554.34.

I have written them and said that I lost my job, I went through cancer and surgery and my husband lost his business. They will not lower their interest rate or make any arrangements. My account has been closed (by me) since 1998 and my account still says I have a credit line of $2000.00 but I can't charge anything (not that I would). They are leaving it ope that way so when late fees (could be as late as one day) start adding up and I go over the limit than they can start charging me over limit fees as well as high interest rate and late fees as well as my regular payment.

I have more than payed any amount I ever charged. Yes I have been late a few times but I have been paying this for over 10 years at 35.00-45.00 a month and 35.00 late fees and it keeps going up. I need to know why they won't work with me. Just doing the math in my head it works out to over 5,000.00 in debt on a $600.00 account.

I have asked repeatedly for Newport News to lower my % rate and if they would bill me on a 30 statement, they refused. They said they could not lower it at this time. As a matter of fact since I asked my % rate went up from 27.8 to 28% and the billing period is 2 days shorter than when I first started asking Newport News to work with me. I can not pay my bill on line (they don't provide this service) therefore making it possible for them to collect a late fee every month. So now I am staggering payments so I'll always pay 2 weeks ahead. This is so totally unfair!
