After receiving First Mariner Bank "loan checks" in the mail for months, and an increasingly desperate financial situation, I stupidly decided to take the offer out of desperation. I went to my local branch check in hand and was gladly given $1,500 in cash. Knowing that these heartless crooks primarily target low credit score and struggling customers whom they gouge later, I had no idea the extremes to which they would take.
Months later I found myself again in a financial crunch an unable to meet my payments. The harassing calls started and here are the sequence of events that followed:
a) After 60 days of being late, a nice lady called and said, "You better pay us our money or we will sue your a*s and take you to court!"
b) I went to the branch 2 months after and went to pay the balance, which I was told was $1,200 including late fees. On arriving I was informed that the payoff balance was in fact $1,695 with no real explanation on the "fees". Just threats of lawyers and court.
c) I paid what I owed and simply refused to pay the rest without a written explanation.
d) No explanation was given and, to my surprise my Bank of America account was frozen, money for "lawyers fees" withdrawn and the $495 in fuzzy math still outstanding.
e) Now my primary checking account is frozen, and my source of income from freelance work checks and deposits is disrupted.
Unbelievable, never in my life have I seen such a thing and I will inform everyone via every social media that I can about this horrible bank. Please boycott this bank as there are much better options.

I too have recieved a loan check from mariner finance, And considering my credit i am gratefull for the oppurtunity to rebuild my credit score. Reading your comment i dont see what your complaint is about? I have read the terms of the loan agreement and i understand how much i have to pay monthly and for how long if i onloy make the minimum payments.
I think they were more then considerate waiting 90 days of non payment to come after you. If you take money from any institution or person with an agreement to pay them back in a agreed amount of time you should be prepared to face the consequences if you do not meet the agreed upon terms. I have put my loan to good use and make more then my minimum payment each month, Never late and its helping me rebuild my repuation with lendors. I just dont see why you posted this on rip off report?
You defaulted on your loan and they took appropriate action. You sir make no sense and noone feels sorry for you. How were you ripped off? Did they change the terms of your loan agreement without noticing you? If you are late on payments then late fees will stack up. If you dont pay them for 90 days they will come after you, And rightly so. Maybe you forgot that nothing in life is for free. Maybe you need this wake up call.

Interesting how you would assume to know anything about my credit score, and moreover how you dare associate intelligence with a credit score. Again, revealing your ingnorance about credit scoring. But what I find most interesting of all, is the number of hostile responses generated in just two short days of this original posting. Hmmmm...must have struck a nerve somewhere. I wonder if this forum would generate so much interest if it were about starving, uneducated children in south america. So, for all you employees/owners/shareholders of questionable lending institutions I will no longer respond and bring your negativity into my life. Your unwillingness to address the real issue at hand speaks volumes. I will however, inform everyone I know in every capacity not to do business with Mariner Finance. And in the lending world, every customer matters. Yes even me.

"Pay attention to what this is really about."
OK. This is about a debtor that defaulted on a loan and then incriminated the lender when pursued for repayment. This is about a debtor that used fabricated excuses to avoid paying a debt.
"perhaps a more in depth investigation into the matter would spare your ignorance"
I investigated your claim that First Mariner Bank received government assistance and determined it to be unfounded. Perhaps you are willing to post a link to a web site that supports your claim. Please also provide proof of the tactics used by First Mariner Bank to suck the public dry.
In your initial report you admitted you have a low credit score. Now we know why. You have made your choice. That is your calling.

Clearly your predjudice towards my personality based on a report shows your ignorance as you know nothing about me. If you want to attack personalities, setup a forum, and I will gladly join. That way we can go toe to toe on various levels. Pay attention to what this is really about. But thank you for your option, you will make an excellent role model someday.

But you defaulted on your loan. You were several months late.
As far as their attitude toward you, based on your attitude in your report, I suspect that you were not the most pleasant person to deal with.
I also think you are being a little overly dramatic. I doubt seriously if your supposed quote - "You better pay us our money or we will sue your a*s and take you to court!" as the first response to you is even close to correct.
Pay your bills and you won't have to deal with any of this.

Hmmmm....so what about the unprofessional demeanor of some of it's employees? What about the "leech-like-tactics" used to suck the public dry and get saved by the Government in the end? What about numerous other complaints filed agains Mariner Finance as revealed to me when I called First Mariner Bank thinking they were the same? And, I had other choices @coast - USA like we all have in this great country of ours. I chose wrong, and I hope others don't do the same. And @coast - USA perhaps a more in depth investigation into the matter would spare your ignorance in attacking the obvious. My ignorance at the time of the loan will not be repeated. Some of us are, at times, just sheep to be slaughtered.

"I will inform everyone via every social media that I can about this horrible bank"
That "horrible bank" loaned you $1500 when you were in a "desperate financial situation" and then you defaulted on the loan. You are a deadbeat and a leech.
