So I got a phone call today from some Nigerian(the first sign?) sounding woman who claimed that I was selected to recieve a $12,500 government grant for reasons unknown. Supposedly the government gives back a certain % of taxes paid to random people she says. Since when does the government give 12.5k to random people?
She had a pretty convincing song and dance going that sounded pretty legitimate, so I played along for a while.
Eventually she said that in order for me to get this grant, I would have to pay $30 to get some package in the mail, which contained the necessary paperwork as well as a check for $100(the 2nd sign) This package she said was for me to look at to see if I was interested in the free money.
Near the end of the conversation she said she would need my bank information in order to deposit the grant money into. At this point she gave me the following information about them.
first national government grant benefits
charlotte, nc
hours mon - fri 9am - 5pm (she called at 5:30, haha)
When the entire first google search page called this place a scam she was busted. I told her an internet search calls her company a scam and she had the nerve to get defensive and ask me how I could have searched when she hadn't even given me their website.
Don't fall for it. Just remember your basic rules. Don't give bank information over the phone or internet, especially to a company that is claiming to do something I've never heard of before.

I had this happen one week ago, exactly as you described it. And like you, I ran a Google search to see if they were legit. When it turned out that they weren't, I grilled them on the offer and whether or not they could guarnatee the money, which of course they couldn't.
So I took the proactive step of reporting them to the FTC. And yesterday, I filed a complaint with the U.S. Postal Inspection service, because they're using false addresses to pose as a legitimate business that operates within the United States. You might want to do the same as well, because the more these clowns get reported to the authorities, the more evidence the authorites will have to track down these people, shut down the scam, and make sure that they pay back the people they have already robbed. We were lucky that we had are wits about us and stopped the BS before they had a chance at our banking info, but others aren't so smart. That's why I felt that I had to send what info I could to the proper authorities.
I would urge anyone who has been called by these people to do the same.
