I recently gave up my job with Food Lion because of the blatant discrimination it practices and refuses to acknowledge.
The Health & Beauty is handled at the store level, by a predominately female force, company wide. This position requires the same duties as grocery mangers (predominately male) but Food Lion refuses to pay them the same or to allow the same amount of time for the work. No one in this company seems to want to hear the issues of these woman. If one raises too much fuss, life at work becomes almost unbearable.
If a study where made by an outside source on the difference in pay, duties, time and sexes dominating these positions, I guarantee there would be a major class action discrimination suit against this company.
Why is a company this size, still allowed to do business like this. Most of us here, have to work, and it makes us afraid to speak out. But somehow, someway, this discrimination has to end!

I worked for them briefly back in the 90's in columbia south carolina and in the meat department and when the new mgr started who was black mind you gave me less hours and basically only worked hours to clean up after the meat cutters did they work. I gave my notice two weeks ofcourse. I heard from the source which was my mgr of the meat department that he did not like new yorkers and did not like white people. I filed a complaint with the home office and ofcourse they did nothing and then the mgr said something to me after I left and I was just a customer and I told him he was s**t and I hope he gets what is coming to him.
I would never work for them again....

Lt about your son...

Your son, if he has worked at Food Lion for a year, like you said he has worked there for 2, he should have gotten the time and a half for holidays, he should be trained as a cashier if it's the next step. Your son needs to contact corporate about this and the management should be reprimanded for their actions. I am an employee at a store nearby, I have been an employee since September of 2008, I worked Christmas so far and I wasn't given time and a half because I hadn't worked a year. He needs to contact corporate immediately to get the issue fixed!! That's my advice.

I would like to help my sons join a class action suit against Food Lion.
I have now had two sons who worked for separate stores. The manager seems to be key to keeping the store employees happy. Most seem under qualified and uninformed of the work policies of the company or even the state or country. Frequently you get managers that rule by fear. I was amazed to hear their policy of firing you if you try to join a union. This company hires the youth around here for their first jobs and teen rating gives it a worse than McDonald's to work for.
My youngest is now working for them. They have never done his yearly review it's almost been two years. They never even gave him a copy of the paperwork he signed when he was hired so he can go back and check what it says. They refuse to train him as a cashier which is his next step up and higher pay. We watch the females apply and immediately get cashier jobs while only guys are hired as baggers. He has worked holidays without getting the time and a half and has only gotten a small raise in all this time. He has only called in sick twice in almost 2 years and missed 2 days due to the schedules change he was not informed of. He is a reliable worker who the customers like. He even went in every time they called and asked if he wanted to work. At first he thought it would help him move ahead, then he stopped after learning it made no difference.
They knew he was starting full time college last week. Two weeks before he asked for a shortened schedule until he knows which nights he's going to need extra homework time. They claim to have forgotten and put him on almost everyday this week. When he called to ask what was up, they admitted forgetting but told him he had to get his own replacements from the other baggers. Evidently they expect him to miss class and work unless he gets a replacement. Since most the other baggers have already quit there is not many to ask.
This is my sons first job. I tried to teach him that you show up, do your job, communicate etc... then it pays you back with a good work review and a raise. He's just miserable and no matter if he quits or is fired good work ethic has not payed him back and it's questionable that he will receive a good review. It all depends on which manager does it and if they are mad at him at the time. I am trying to make him give a 2 week notice if he decides to quit. He says if they won't treat me with respect why should I treat them that way?
Food Lion seems to leaves my sons feeling used and dirty as a worker there.

Someone, Please buy them out!!!
AUTHOR: Bonnie - (U.S.A.)

On the Outer Banks of North Carolina, there are 6 food lion stores. We are a tourist area and the influx of business "in season" is amazing (million dollar weeks in sales). Food Lion brings in students from overseas to work from April thru October. Nothing against these kids, but they work, tax free, any many have checks bigger than your full time workers. They also work 2 or 3 jobs and are given set schedules so they can do that.
The full time workers must train them (thou, no hours are given to train), and of course, are reprimanded when they don't do the job (they want the money & don't care).
Years ago the full time people looked forward to the tourist season as then we were able to get overtime work to balance us when in the winter months they cut your hours to as little as 20/25 hours a week.
The personal policy states all types of issues, but is totally overlooked if you're "in the click". The policy is used only for those that have not been turned into a robot (kept their own minds)to be then utilized for your termination.
The HBA person at one of these beach stores does all herself, and has about 4 isles as well as numerous items moved from grocery to HBA, that are placed everywhere throughout the store. Those totes are HEAVY, and often HBA and Produce (never meat & deli) are called to the front to bag groceries (therfore getting behind in their own departments)when the lines are long.
This company is bad news to the employees and I believe they need a union big time. What is trying to be done now is to eliminate unnecessary full time people, keeo only department heads, all else. part time and the summer workers.
Wake up people. Stand up for your rights. This is a Belgum company with 51% ownership. Food Lion's goal is to be #1 at all cost. We are not numbers, we are live human beings who deserve dignity and respect.
Yes, there very well may be a class action suit against this company, and if I can do anything about that I certainly will. I have a story to tell.

A misconception shared by many
AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Tuesday, October 19, 2004
As a member of management for Food Lion, I must clarify a misconception shared by many concerning HBC. The HBC associate handles an entire dept, single handily, from beginning to end. There is but a rare few that get any help. That associate has all the same duties I do as a dept manager, and then some. These associates are predominately woman and they make this dept work in spite of corporate, or lack of, interference. They are an exceptional group, but unfortunately we lose the best of the best because corporate refuses to address the issues faced by these professionals. A single HBC tote can equal as much and more as an entire grocery float. Yet grocery is given almost twice as much time to merely stock. And HBC consists of far more than just one aisle. HBC can be found on every aisle of a store.
As long as HBC remains profitable, this company will let it be. They will continue to use and abuse these woman because in truth, if you raise a stink, you are history. That is the way it is and has always been. If corporate were smart, they would listen to and address the issues faced day in and day out by these woman.
If they don't start paying attention, they might soon find a union stepping in to give these ladies an equal and respected voice!!! They may also find themselves at the losing end of a class action suit. Less qualified men still have the higher pay, overall, and that can't continue. We have far too many intelligent, competent woman, doing more and making less in this company.
But, in all fairness, this company has recently started making major changes in the area of employee relations. Perhaps this is on the agenda for a major change.
All we can do is hope.....

I Dislike Food Lion As Much As The Next Guy, But...
AUTHOR: Susan - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Sunday, October 17, 2004
Ryan, even though I myself dislike Food Lion and agree that they have unfair practices, you cannot honestly say that a Grocery Manager and an HBA clerk hold the same responsibilities, and therefore deserve the same pay.
HBA(health and beauty aid) is typically one isle of a store, and is the one predominant duty of a HBA clerk. Most stores actually have people to assist the HBA clerk. The Grocery Manager on the other hand is the 3rd manager on the Food Lion store level totem pole, and is held responsible for the same things a store manager is held responsible for in the manager and assistant manager's absense.
Also, the Grocery Manager is ABOVE the HBA clerk, and is in fact the HBA clerk's direct supervisor. I don't think that one can honestly say a Grocery Manager getting paid more is an unfair practice.
I do however agree there are unfair practices in Food Lion, a lot involving women, however the most forthright one is involving favortism towards those who stroke upper-level management the right way, if you know what I mean. I will leave it at that.
