On October 16, 2007 at approximately 7 pm, I visited Freeway Chevrolet in Chandler Arizona with the intention of purchasing a 2008 Corvette Z06. The salesperson was very knowledgeable, and very helpful. I did not get his card, however his first name was Sam. The sticker price on the Black 2008 Corvette Z06 was $74,000.
I explained to Sam that I was there to pay cash for the vehicle and would like to negotiate the price out the door at $68,500. He asked me to write down the price and initial it, which I did. He then took the offer to another man who I assumed to be the night manager or assistant manager. The manager came ack with a price of over $87,000 out the door, which was an increase of $13,000 over the sticker price posted on the window of the vehicle. Not only was Sam the salesman shocked, but my wife and I were totally dumbfounded that all of a sudden the price jumped to a figure not quoted or posted on the vehicle.
The manager, or assistant manager said there was a $5,000 fee that they (the dealership) charged to the purchaser for buying a Z06, and that Freeway Chevrolet was lower than any other dealer in the valley. He said that most dealers charged $20,000! After we said no, we were not interested in the car at that price, especially due to the fact that there was no truth in advertising, he then offered us the car at the sticker price of $74,000, which we were not willing to pay.
I would like to know how a dealership can add "hidden" dealer charges in excess of the posted price on the car, and where this money goes. In the last 40 years that I have purchased cars, most of which were for cash, I have never come up against anything underhanded, or not on a printed price list.
Not only would I like to file a complaint, but I would also like an answer as to whether these "hidden" charges are legal, and if they are, what statute number authorizes such charges.
A copy of this letter has been filed with the Attorney General's office as well as the Better Business Bureau.

#7 Consumer Suggestion
Thorobred Chevrolet is not the parent company of Freeway Chevrolet and is not part of the Chapman Auto Group

Thorobred Chevrolet is named incorrectly in this report as the parent company of Freeway Chevrolet when Chapman Chevrolet is really the parent company and Thorobred Chevrolet is not related in any way to either of these companies.
If this customer wants a fair price on a new vehicle in the future I suggest this customer start with Thorobred Chevrolet, as our company has never marked up a Corvette Z06 or even the new Camaro above the MSRP, which has been a common practice with other Phoenix Metro Chevrolet Dealers.
Thorobred Chevrolet is a private family owned dealership located in Chandler, Az since 1978, and is Arizona's Largest Chevrolet Location with over 300,000 satisfied customers and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

This is not a ripoff

Sorry pal, but your story here is not a ripoff. Not even close.
A dealer can charge anything they want for a car. The MSRP is just that....Manufacturer's SUGGESTED Retail Price. Usually, prices on vehicles are well under MSRP. But there are always those limited, high demand cars...like the Z06 Vette, the Ford GT, The Shelby GT500....that will always be in demand, and they often command a price above MSRP. It's just the way the car business works.
Nobody sheds any tears for a dealer when they steeply discount cars and sell them for invoice. On those rare occasions when they have a red hot vehicle with a lot of demand, they have every right to charge whatever they want for it.
Me? No way I'm paying over msrp for a car, no matter how much I want it. But as the above commenters have said, some folks will. In my opinion, those "some folks" are those with more money than brains...but hey, it's their choice. If you have to be the kid on the block with the newest toy....then you have to pay for that privlege.

I also worked at Freeway Chevrolet. I worked as a salesman and although car sales was not for me and it was a tough business... I do think that they were probably more reputable than most car dealerships. I myself would never pay a price over sticker, but some people do. I can understand why this first guy did not get the car-- That was a ridiculous offer. Also, good luck to him with his used Z06.... Cars can always be bought cheaper used.
The sales managers were kinda tough at times, but they are there to make a profit, just like any other product. I would buy a car there if I wanted one that they had. They definitely took care of customers while I was there. I never really saw an angry customer.
I did see a lot of salespeople come and go... It was a tough job.

After searching for a few weeks I saw an ad in the paper for a 2007 ZO6 and gave a call to the number. I asked if I could come and take a look at the car and was given the address. It was in perfect condition and had passed an emissions test two weeks prior to my visit. Also the car had only 2k miles on it. I asked the price and almost fell to the floor when he told me. It was 25k less than the "sticker price". I asked him why so low and he said, I am getting a divorce and need to liquidate all assets as soon as possible or "Mama will sell it anyway".
So I wrote the man a check and am now the proud owner of a ZO6 for a very low price! And it also has the 2LZ package and the previous owner had a 2008 black carbon fiber console installed at the dealer because he did not like the 2007 one. So chew on that freeway ripofflrolet.

This is how it is

I worked at Freeway Chevy in the past as a salesmen, and the Sales Managers call the shots and they are quite brutal. It isn't uncommon at all that Corvettes carry a premium, usually it is $5,000 over sticker. And a Z06 could be higher then that. Even the HHR's which are junk were asking $1000 over sticker when they first came out. And how does that make sense? A car that is 16 to 21 thousand asking $1000 over sticker. Well, people were unhappy and left or we would sell them the car at sticker or even below that.
Your offer was outrageous for a Z06...like the poster above me, they are in high demand. So the sales manager gave you an outrageous counter-offer, he basically wanted you to leave and to not deal with you at all.

I've Seen That A Number Of Times

I've seen that a number of times. Saw them asking $5.000 OVER sticker on a Mazda M-5? Saw them asking several thousand over sticker when the new model mustang first came out. Had a friend who put down a $5,000 deposit on one of those lexus 430? The lexus dealer called him back and offered him $9,000 IF he wouldn't take delivery cause they were selling for $12,000 OVER sticker. He took the car. ANYONE who's fool enough to pay sticker, let alone over sticker deserves what they get. You had the right to make an offer, which they could accept or decline. They had the right to make a counter offer which YOU could accept or decline. If you don't like the price, go elsewhere. Don't sound like a spoiled child that didn't get his ice cream. Screw them and their car. IF you think the vehicle's gonna increase in value, pony up the money. Just where DO you think the extra $5 grand's gonna go? Straight into the owner's pocket.

let me get this straight...assuming your state taxes your purchase at about 5.6%, you offered about $63,000 for an in-demand car that sells for $74,000? and you think they tried to rip you off? maybe you should call other dealers and see if they will take your offer...
