I was going over my monthly cell phone bill and I noticed a charge for $9.99 that I did not authorize. I called My cell phone provider (T-Mobile) to question this charge. They explained that it was an alert service that I may have unknowingly agreed to by simple opening up a text message. It was suggested that perhaps when I saw it was nonsense that I just deleted it without reading it.
That is exactly what happened. I received 2 text messages back to back while I was work. I was busy and when I saw that it looked like an advertisement I just deleted them without reading them.
The trick they play is that they somehow default a setting at the bottom of the message so that when it is deleted, you agree to accpet what ever B___ SH___ deal they are offering. And it is usually a recurring monthly charge.
T-Mobile was kind enough to eliminate the charge I saw, and they gave me a number to call to cancel the "Service".
When I called the number, 888-351-6703 of course you get an automated system at first, which did nothing more than frustrate me even more! It told me to go to a webite called CancelAlerts.com That is where I found this site. And I read that it was nothing more than a scam to take my money! And that many others have complained about the same scam.
I called the number again, and this time tried ebtering my cell phone # 5 times, and it still would not take, (it kept telling me I entered in an invalid number) so I actually dialed "0" to try to speak to a HUMAN BEING.
After waiting on hold for about 5 minutes I spoke to a person and complained about the bogus charges and demanded that the service be cancelled, and my money be refunded. I was given instructions to fax my cell phone bill in to their accounting department. I told the person on the phone that I was not happy with their company's tactics, and that it was rather unethical to be so sneaky like that.
That's how we leave off. I'll fax my cell phone bill to them in the morning. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
