My friend and I decided to join a game we used to play about 5 years ago, but instead of starting all the way over we decided to buy characters ( Final Fantasy 11) from a site called www.gametag.com.  I purchased my character on there.. cost about 1450 dollars and as a gift my dad gave me the money to pay for it. So once I paid for it.. it took a month for me to get the character.. I asked them why and they said that the original account owner has to take the transfer money that i sent to the site.. that took a month.. Once they emailed me with my character that i paid for I automatically joined up and switched servers to a server where all my friends were.  The character had really nice gear ..hence why i paid so much for it.. and I was having a great time playing it.. till about 2 weeks ago I was getting complications from the game.. whenever I logged on.. it said someone else was logged on from another terminal... mind you I don't give out my information to anyone especially after I paid 1500 bucks for my character..

so I called some of my friends who were on the game and my character was logged on and I wasn't even playing on it..they changed the emails to my account.. also they were playing on my character with my credit card! So I asked my friends to figure out who was on my character and they said that it was the original owner and that his character was hacked!  I was so mad because he was the one that sold the character and now he has it back and changed all the info.. I called Square Enix and they said in order for me to change the account back to me I would need the original owner name and his bdate.. Gametag was suppose to have change the info to my name once i purchased the character and they haven't done that.. I email them several of times and they haven't done anything except sending me emails saying they have received the email from me.. and so far about almost 3 weeks now they haven't done anything.. also the credit card is still being used on the account thats mine.. and I just don't know what to do..my friends on FF11 told me that the character has dumped all my items that i worked hard for about 4 months and goes around telling everyone that he hacked my account and wanted it back! Gametag hasn't done anything but took my money and gave me promises about getting the account back for me..

I shelled out 1500 dollars and i been ripped off.. Please help me .. Im getting really angry with this and just feel like everything I done was for nothing and the money my dad gave me was for nothing and I really don't want to get him involved because he's a lawyer and I just don't want to go through the hassle for this.

They got my account back and gave me a gift certificate

AUTHOR: Artemis - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Finally have time to update this report.

I rushed to the gun a bit and posted this when I should have been patient. When I complained on this site about them, I was frustrated as I didn't want to lose $1500. So what ended up happening after I posted this was that they transferred my account over to their legal department. They provided me multiple updates for about 10 days on the progress of getting my account back. Finally after 10 days, they were able to give me the account back and provided me a gift certificate in the process. Apparently their legal department had gone through a process and were able to resolve the issue with the owner but they didn't tell me exactly what they did.

I have to admit I was pretty amazed with how they handled this process. I thought I was screwed and like most of you have said, I thought I was screwed as I have never heard of a site that would help after an account was recalled. I won't be buying another character again but if any of my friends do want to get an account, I would recommend them.

Oh and they also gave me a gift certificate for the troubles I experienced!

No one can help

AUTHOR: MochaG - (United States of America)

No one can help. I hope you will learn from this expensive experience that never try to cheat.

The game ToS does not allow buying/selling the game account or in-game item with real money [http://support.na.square-enix.com/rule.php?id=20&la=1&tag=ff11user]. Gametag.com is not legal to do that kind of business, but no one enforces it so it is still around. Regardless how the site obtain the account information (the owner really got hacked or changed of heart), you have no right to claim that the account belongs to you. You spent money on something that cannot be completely changed hand due to original ownership in digital world. All online games I knew always give the right to the original owner unless there is a system to really change the ownership (but I have not seen one yet and doubt it is practical).

You could only dispute the credit card charge if it is still being charged. It is your responsibility to stop it before it is getting worse now. Do NOT expect to get the account back because it is not yours and will never be yours (by mean of the ToS and reality).

You're screwed

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 09, 2012

MMOs generally have clauses in their terms of service, or end user license agreement that state the characters and accounts belong to the company and not the user. These accounts are non-transferable. When someone sells their account on the black market, its a risk to the buyer. Typically you cannot change any of the information on the account. If gametag is claiming they could change the name, etc they are lying to you. Also, there is nothing stopping the original owner from calling at any time and claiming they were hacked by you. They can provide all the information on the original owner of the account, and will get it restored to them. There's nothing you can do to stop this, because sale of these accounts is forbidden. If you did manage to convince Square Enix that you did indeed purchase the account from the original owner, all that would happen would be the account getting banned.

Your only recourse is against gametag itself. You might grab your agreement with them and see what obligations they have to your account. odds are, they don't have any obligations. These companies get rich ripping people like you off. You can take them to court if you like, but that may be very difficult to prove anything.

This is why you don't buy old characters...

This is a pretty common scam in MMORPGs, someone hacks an account, lists it for sale and makes profit.  when the original owner finds that there account is compromised they contact the company the game is through (square enix, blizzard, lucas arts, ect...) and get their account restored.

In the end the person who payed big bucks for the account is the one that gets shafted.  The safe bet is just to start fresh next time because this is a fight that you won't win.
