Garden State Readers GSR - magazine subscription scam - Avenel, New Jersey

These people called me at work asking me to take a survey. They offered me a free gift as a thank you (A Walmart gift card), and 4 magazines of my choice. All I would have to do is pay the postage for the magazines. The postage was supposed to be $8 and some change, and they'd charge me about 17 dollars every 2 months instead of charging every month. It didn't sound like a bad deal at the time and I figured I'd cancel.

Well, they let me choose the magazines I get but they've been sending ones I didn't even request. I've been getting Parenting magazines, and I'm NOT a parent... I've been getting fishing/hunting magazines, and I'm NOT into that either, as well as some business magazines... again, not something I'm interested in. It also turns out they've been charging me $17 every month, NOT every 2 months. I asked them to cancel everything, and they told me I was not allowed to cancel. Since they wouldn't let me cancel, I changed my credit card number. Now they're calling me every day at work and at home, telling me I owe a ton of money (which I'm NOT going to pay) and threatening to send it to collections.

They never told me I couldn't cancel until I actually tried to cancel. They also never sent me my gift card.

I've contacted the Better Business Bureau, and hopefully they can help me out.

Anyway, if you get a call from these people, do not give them your information. It's a huge scam, they're deceptive about their billing procedure, and they don't even send you the magazines you request. Major scam.
