My husband and I first called Gate City because we were going to buy a car with funds available in our account. We asked if we could for One day have the P.O.S limit raised from 2,000 to 15,000 to do this. We did not know exactly what car we wanted or what price it was going to be.
I was told over the phone after holding for quite sometime that they did not feel comfortable with that and to go to the nearest branch. I can understand that part, I could have been anyone who was calling with my information.
So on foot we walked over to the 13th Ave S branch. I explained to the teller what we were intending to do and what was said over the phone. She took my identification and went to speak with someone in the office. After an even more lengthy wait time she came back and stated that it would only be able to be given in cash or check form.
I did not want a check at all for this venture, simply because we were going to a dealership and if the car was cheaper what then? I didn't want to have to pay extra money simply because they knew I had it!
I asked her why and she just stated that it was not approved to raise the limit that high. Ok this is a DEBIT card not a credit card! If its not in there it won't clear. I got no other explanation then that. I said fine I will just have to take the actual cash. She left again and came back out with a stack full of hundred dollar bills.
At this point she begins to count them in front of us. She did not at all concern herself with the customer next to us or anyone else at the other 3 counter spots who could clearly hear her, because she was not at all discreet. She Just asked me if I wanted it in an envelope or a bag. So now I am very uncomfortable as the guy next to me upset he actually has to come back in to pay on his loan instead of an automatic withdrawal because funds will not be available at that time, has become very interested in what we are doing. I shoved the bag in my small purse tucked it under my shoulder and left the bank.
Now I was expected to walk around Fargo with a sum of 15,000.00 in my purse! I do not and can not understand the logic of this what so ever!! Nor do I feel it was Gate City's right to put me in unnecessary danger! Simply put it was my available funds and if they could give it to me in cash, then it should have been available on my card if necessary! Horrible business practice, and I will make sure all will know how courteous and helpful and concerned with some ones safety this bank truly is! I am just very thankful that nothing horrible occurred based on their apathetic service!!

Debit Card Limits...

Each bank has specifc daily limits for their cards and standards as to when the limit can be raised. It doesn't matter what balance you have in your account, if your request & history don't meet their standards you don't get the limit increase.
As far as you "beng in danger" you're the one that demanded the money that day. You could have dealt with the car dealership & then gone t the bank; gotten 3 $5000 cashier checks; or several other options. If you want total freedom in acessing your money, the only way to do it is to keep the money at home. Otherwise you face things like daily spending limits, daily withdrawal limits or the bank insisting on following their rules not what you think should be done.
And no, I don't work for them. Never heard of them.

It was our first time buying a car out right, and by the time we found what we wanted, test drove and sat down for the financials the bank would have already been closed!! So thank you for your opinion but it is not relevant in this case.

Simple Solution

The simple solution for this would have been to go to the dealer, find the car you want and the total due, and then go to the bank and get a cashiers check.
