I called GE Monogram customer care at 800-444-1845 and scheduled a service call for a fridge (Model ZISS480NRISS) that was not working correctly. The fridge cost $8,000 and is just 4 years old. Repair guy comes to my home and 20 minutes later charges me $602.00 The part replaced was part number WR55X10490 (made by EMBARCO for GE) and I was charged $396 for the part. This same part is sold by (((competitor's name redacted))) for just $310 and you can find it on Bizrate and ebay for as low as $255.

I was then charged $90 for labor despite it taking only 2 min (one Phillips screw) to install as well as a an additional $79.99 service call charge. A whopping $170 of labor for maybe 20 minutes?    When you call 800-444-1845 to make the appointment you are quickly advised that the $79.99 service call fee will be applied to any repairs that are made. When I called today, it took nearly an hour to get the rep, CINDY (case # 161318168) to credit back the $79.99 service call fee but she refused to credit back the overcharge of the part, or the $90 that the tech charged for 5 minutes of labor to turn one Phillips screw and a electrical quick connect.

Cindy started out nice, but then quickly questioned that anyone other than GE sold part #WR55X10490 (Google quickly changed her mind) and she questioned my claim that the service visit fee was supposed to be credited back".  After she told me she would credit the service visit fee of $79:.99, I told her I appreciated that but felt the other overcharges needed to also be credited and I would take it up with my CC company in the form of a dispute.  Oh how her tone quickly changed and she said she wasn't going to credit anything. WOW! I called back into her own line and had a service rep confirm it was a standard policy to credit it back if repairs were made did she credit me".

My ask is simple: I want the difference in what GE charged me ($396) and what (((redacted))) charges ($310) for the same exact part.  I would also like to have half the labor ($45) credited back' as well as ther $79.99 service trip fee credited back as initially promised.   Total rip off is $205 of the $602.00 charge.     Here is a link to (((redacted))) price for the exact part: (((link redacted)))

In this economy, and on an $8,000 refrigerator that is only 4 years old, why is a Fortune 5 company as big as GE overcharging it's customers????  I am totally fine with GE making some money on me but $170 for 20 minutes of labor and charging me $396 for a part that I can find on ebay for $255 brand new, is too much to take.    Add a smarmy customer care rep who did little to help me despite spending quite a while on the phone with and I am not a satisfied GE Monogram customer.

sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company, ..plus, if you post a competitors name more than likely they will show up on search engines as a Rip-off! - - your comments on this policy are welcome. They knew they could over charge you!

How did they know they could?

Simple.  You were fool enough to pay $8000 for a refridgerator!  How much do you think that refridgerator was overpriced?

If it was so easy to do and the parts were so cheap, why didn't you fix it yourself?

I'd say not a total Ripoff.

I don't know about the rest of the charges, but it is pretty customary in appliance repair to mark parts up 100%.  Sorry you felt taken advantage of on that.
