My husband was driving his Dodge dually to work on a Sunday afternoon when all of a sudden the truck started to shake and before he could slow down the rubber started coming off his tire. These tires had 38000 miles on them. The flying rubber tore up the wiring on the drivers side, broke lights that were on the side of the bed, and tore the mud flat and its bracket up. The cost was $385.23 to do the repairs, plus a half a day of missed work.
The tires, General Amertrak came on the truck when he purchased it brand new. He makes his living as a rig welder. He missed half a day of work and spent the next weekend repairing his truck bed.
I e-mailed Continental tire and they told me to keep the tire. I told them it was all over the highway. They said they could do nothing because they needed to see that tire before they would do anything.
The place where my husband bought 4 more tires told him that Continental was noted for not adjusting tires or taking the blame. It took him 6 months to hear from them on an adjustment they would not accept. T
These tires are dangerous and should be taken off the road. We will not ever purchase a new truck with General tires on it again.

Not just retreads.

After the tread separated on my OEM Firestone at 40K, it was about 2 weeks until the other rear tire had tread separation. Fortunately, I noticed it was beginning to separate while it was still in the driveway.
I don't know if the OEM tires are made cheaper, but when I've seen tread separation on non-retreads, it's always seems to be on OEM tires.

Thanks for the additional information.
If this is really happening I'd be upset too.
I guess I thought only retreads had the tread come off like this. Not good.
It seems like showing them the bald tire with no tread would tell them something usefull, especially if the others are realatively OK.
Good luck!

It is a dually. The tire was not completely bare but what was left at the tire shop was put in junk pile and picked up. I realize that 38,000 is alot of miles but this has happened to both of our trucks. We replaced the tires on the front of his truck 2 months ago and mine last year. The other replacements did not have damage to our trucks. The tread separating and the shaking of the truck is what is dangerous. Also, I looked up Continental Tire on Google and their are 15 pages of complaints on the same tires (General) talking about the shaking and tread.

Inside Dual

It was an inside dual and no nail the tread separated and came off. This happened to the front tires also at 30,000 miles but there was no damage. The same thing happened to my truck, front tires on vacation last year. NO they did not adjust them.

After 38,000 miles there are many things that could happen to a tire that is not the fault of the manufacturer. They want to see it so they can try to determine what happened to it.
Are you saying that every piece of tire is gone and there is absolutely nothing to see? He was driving on a bare rim?
I would not expect them to just pay based on your claim.
And, no, I do not work for any tire company or anyone related to a tire company.

Was this a dual rear tire? if so what happens is one goes flat (Usualy a nail) and shreds because of the heat generated whie running.
If tht's what happened, there's no warranty, any tire will blow and shred running low or flat.

Don't expect much.

The same thing happened to me after 40K miles on original equipment Firestones. I had about $500 damage to my wheel well and truck bed. Firestone wasn't interested in hearing about a tire with that many miles on it.
About the most you can do is to file a safety complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation. The website is here :

Needed Tire

We did file a report with Continental and they told us they needed the tire. It is along the road where he was driving. They said inorder for the complaint to be looked at they must have the tire. That got us no where. So I have filed a complaint with the government recall. I hope this does something for someone.
