I went to Gentex career fair, and interviewed well.  I got called back for 2nd and 3rd interview. The 3rd interview was a test. A placement test designed to establish whether you are a suitable candidate for the position. In the test you are required to assemble parts, inspect parts, and a couple of various computer-timed tasks. The test is done in a group setting, where they promise, "There are jobs for everyone, and you are not competing for a position." This could not be further from the truth. During my test, I stayed just faster than the computer on all tasks. Yet was denied a position with the company. First, I am fast with my hands. I type well, practice my guitar, and have years of experiance in auditing and assembly. This should have landed me a job. Second, within a weak of my rejection, a friend of mine had a daughter, who just graduated from high school with no industrial experiance, get offered a position with Gentex after going through the same test. I would bet that she did not perform to the level that I did, however they probably have a different set of standards for those with no experiance, making it easier for them to get in.

Gentex justifies this testing procedure based on the fact that they got this procedure from TOYOTA. It is well known that the Japanese hiring procedures are hightly competitive. This highly competive environment in Japan has caused a high rate of suicide amoung the young in their country. This is not an element that we should adopt in this country. I hope these practices do not continue to spread into other companies.  Just as a side note; Gentex is still hiring and advertising positions available. I believe this is due to thier terribly competive job placement strategies. Over 1000 people showed up for the job fiar I attended 2 months ago and these positions are still not filled. Gee, I wonder why!
