I would like to share the experience I have had with Glow Boy pellet stoves, manufactured and sold by Dansons Group, Inc. I say stoves because my fiancee and I bought two; one for our home and one for our rental property. Within a few weeks we had numerous minor problems with both of these inserts. Since they had been purchased and installed by a Dansons Inc. dealer, we contacted him to have the units examined. The fireplaces were examined and deemed fit for use, so we continued heating our properties with them. Late December, our tenants reported that our rental property sustained interior damage when the pellets that the auger drops ignited, causing a plume of smoke to fill the downstairs and leave soot everywhere. It was caught early and turned off immediately. Again, the problem was reported. Lastly, on January 17, 2010, my fiancee noticed that our home was filling with thick black smoke and soot originating from the downstairs Glow Boy fireplace. He went downstairs and could not see his hand in front of his face. He almost passed out from the fumes and when he finally reached the unit, he observed that the pellets above the auger were smoldering. He had to douse the pellets and vacuum them out of the insert in order to prevent the fire from spreading and is absolutely convinced that if he would have been away from home or sleeping that our house would have gone down. Several hours later, after opening every window in the house, scrubbing the walls, ruining a shop vac (and later having our carpets cleaned) our downstairs resembled our downstairs again. The situation was reported to Glow Boy and despite all of the documented problems, their response (Roger from Dansons Group, Inc) was "that's happened to me before too". After going through a lengthy interrogation about how we used our unit (even though we had been instructed on its proper use and followed every direction precisely) he determined that it had in fact been a defective unit and they would replace it. Why would we want to replace the unit after two separate but nearly identical fireplaces have caused fires at two of my properties and you just admitted that yours has too? After speaking with his manager, I was told that, "Because the government had certified these devices, they were safe and we would not be entitled to anything but replacement(s).

Beware consumers. If you order any Dansons Group Inc. units you are literally playing with fire. I have since filed a conciliation court action (though I would be interested in hearing from anyone else with problems because a class action might be appropriate) and reported Dansons products to the product safety division of the United States. We have not used either of these inserts since the fires and they still sit menacingly in our homes...

i have a glow boy stove and i must say i have only had it for a year and have had to rebuild it from the ground up.

it keeps stopping, it barely puts out any heat, and as we speak it is minus 30 c out and my husband is trying to get the auger motor to work again. and of course no danson stores are open. this stove is horrid and we have not only spent thousands to purchase it, but we have literalyy spent another two grand to fix it. the guy in edmonton has been helpful, but seriously danson, you need a better and safer product because this is bs this thing spends more time broken down then working when i bought the stove no one told me i would have to rebuild it!!!!

Based on the information given we cannot best determine the cause.  As with any pellet stove they must be cleaned regularly.  Also the fuel that was used in the appliance may have been an issue such as excess sawdust in the pellets cause auger problems and poor burn.  All of our units were put through extensive tests by the safety lab and they meet or exceed the standards written by the government.  Remember a pellet stove still burns wood and should be handled, cleaned and maintained with the utmost respect.  We were also not able to speak with the consumer directly after numerous attempts to try to get the information in order to solve the issue.
