I had to make an account on Ripoff Report just so I can agree with every single thing on another report from Katherine back in 2008. I called the number and was told hiring would be held tomorrow. I went there and got hired on the spot (within exactly 15 min. of walking in the door). 4 hours later I ended up turning down the job, knowing it wasn't completely as it seemed. There was no explanation at all about being an independent contractor not employee and what that would entitle, and I think that is Very important information.

All red flags listed in Katherine's report are honest and true, and ironically I noticed exactly the same things. The "Reference" sheet handed to us at orientation... we needed to list FIVE people as 'emergency contacts'? Stupidly I listed 5 close friends and their numbers, and now I really hope they don't get called by the telemarketers due to me. Think about it, they make TONS of phone calls to advertise their product. Phone numbers are like gold to these people. Speaking of Gold...

Golden Circle is the alias used by the Southington,CT branch office, and the sign is white with bold red letters(looks like a Chinese restaurant sign not an office) with a smaller black sign with white letters saying 'Kirby' next to it above what looks like a vacuum storage area(?) which is located in a small plaza.

My first day of training was three hours long and pretty bearable. The Recruiter was very friendly, enthusiastic, 'POSITIVE', and acted like a true salesman. Really sold the job and it's benefits to me. $500 a week with a goal of 15 appointments per week (60/Mo) and incentives about $200 per 2 sales?! But remember, how many phone calls are needed before people agree to setup appointments to see a demonstration in their house to possibly buy a $2500 vacuum? It is a very well built piece of equipment but its 2010 and not many people really have that money for a vacuum.

This specific detail caught my eye the second I pulled up to the building. 'Now Hiring' permanently stenciled onto the glass above the door. That obviously means they want everyone they possibly can to apply, which again obviously means they don't keep too many employees for too long. Not a very encouraging thought.

I personally never stepped foot into these big Kirby salesmen-transportation vans but I did see one parked in a lot across the street and one with about 4 or more people in it leaving the office, I would guess going to a job. Like stated in Katherine's report, they WERE rusted, dented, 20 year old P.O.S. with cheap stencil letters on the window of the company name. If that rolled up in my neighborhood with people piling out and knocking on doors, I'm 100% positive parents would be sketched out and make sure their kids are inside. Creepy looking vans to say the least.

Listen, Kirby has been around since 1915, so it really is a legit company. BUT they use sly tactics to make you interested in working for them such as not advertising the Kirby(or alias) name in newspaper help-wanted ads or Telling you in detail all about the 'benefits' (no not health & dental important info) using the possibility of making big money to lure you in. Also they may post several different job ads using similar numbers to call such as: 329-0316 to 329-0324 but they all lead to the same place.
This job is not really for unemployed people, but could be used as a way to make money on the side because they wont keep paying you $500 a week if you don't make sales. It has got to be hard work to try to sell a piece of equipment like that.
Try it out, go to the orientation, yet make sure to keep in mind what your getting yourself into before you make any decisions no matter how glorious it seems..
thanks for reading my RipoffReport. now I still need a job...
