The moving crew lied to me in the episode below and then lied to their own management.

I took quotes from several full service movers for a move from Redwood City, CA to Atlanta, GA. I chose Graebel Erickson out of Milpitas, CA. The move was scheduled for December 2nd, 2010. The movers showed up. I walked them through the place, pointed out what needed to be packed and what wasn't going, etc. They went outside. I assumed that was to their truck to get their supplies. After about ten minutes, the crew leader popped his head back in my door. He said they were being sent to another job and that a dispatcher would call me shortly. About five minutes later I get the call from my moving coordinator. She says the moving crew said there was cat feces all around the apartment and that the crew would not return because of the condition of the apartment. She also said they had reported that the mattress of my bed was "soiled with cat urine".

There was no cat feces anywhere except the cat box. My mattress is nearly pristine. They had not even removed the (clean) sheets or memory foam mattress topper to see the mattress. It is still fairly new and has been covered by 3 inches of memory foam since we bought it.

What there was in a few places around the apartment was cat food. Dry, brown pellets of cat food in the carpet. My vacuum died about 10 days ago. I thought "why buy a vacuum before I move to Atlanta?" Now, I know why. I'll be doing that tomorrow. Even if a cat had ever peed on my mattress, I can't imagine the urine stream that it would take to saturate three inches of memory foam before getting to the mattress. Not to mention two sheets and probably a blanket or comforter. I know they never saw the actual mattress. I know it. I don't have a great sense of smell, but if I were sleeping in cat urine, I think even I'd know it.  It's a strong and distinctive smell.

Anyway, I have movers coming first thing on Saturday from another company, AMS Bekins in Burlingame, CA. I won't be leaving tomorrow morning as planned for my cross country drive. I'll be leaving when those movers leave on Saturday. I also have, as a back up, an appointment on Saturday with Junk King. I think this is a little paranoid, but after what happened today, I can't be too prepared. If the movers have any problem with my apartment or my stuff on Saturday, Junk King will take everything I can't fit in my car. I'll start over in Atlanta. My salesman tried to go to bat for me. I'm sure he didn't want to lose his commission and I genuinely believe he felt badly for me. He said that he had started off on the trucks and wouldn't sign the company up for a job that he wasn't comfortable doing himself. The salesman for the second company came through and told me my apartment was fine, but suggested going ahead and getting the vacuum so there would be no question when his crew shows up on Saturday.

I really needed to be on the road tomorrow, but that's not happening. I've had one of the most stressful days of my life over this. I can say that even after having just gone through a divorce. I can't feel like I know this move is happening now until I see stuff being put on the truck. It's also going to cost me about $500 more to go with this other company on such short notice.

If the moving crew had said anything to me, I would have explained that this is cat food. Heck, I would have eaten a piece of it to show them it was cat food. A cross country move is incredibly stressful. They have made it 100 times more stressful than it needed to be and have cost me quite a bit of extra money.
