Signed up with Grasshopper toll-free number service last month. I got a "welcome" call to my toll-free number from the company. I also received the call as a voicemail text to my email address (an extra charge service).

I started to become suspicious, wondering if they were planning to charge me for this call. About a week later, I received another call/email from the company, this one saying, "...if you have any questions, don't hesitate to call..."

I then wondered how many times this was going to happen, and again, were they going to try to charge me for it? I emailed their "customer service" to tell them if this was the case, I would not be paying for unethical calls such as this. The email I received back (obviously no one had bothered to read my email) was a form response trying to up-sell me to a higher-minute plan. ("If you are worried about your minute usage, we can upgrade you to a plan with more included minutes...") What a joke!

I wouldn't need a plan with more minutes if your company wasn't (the only entity) calling my number! Got the bill. Sure enough, Grasshopper CHARGED ME for the minute usage of THEIR phone calls to my number, as well as the voicemail transcription of those calls!

Now, if I didn't have the voicemail transcription, I would not have necessarily known that these calls were from the company I was paying to process the calls...so the suspicions of these other reports, that Grasshopper is auto-dialing their phone numbers to run up charges...I don't doubt it in the least!

Bad ethics, this company.

Grasshopper Reply to Sammi

AUTHOR: Allison from Grasshopper - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Hi Sammi,

First off, I'm sorry to hear you had a negative experience with our company. I wanted to reach out to address your complaints as I think there might've been a misunderstanding.

The first welcome call you received from our CEO is not billed to your account. The message you received is the default message all new accounts come with and isn’t actually a real call into your account. As for our welcome calls, they go to the contact phone number on file, not to your Grasshopper number so you shouldn't have been charged for those calls. Is there a chance you had your contact number on file set to forward to your Grasshopper number? If so, those calls may have shown up on your bill but we would've gladly refunded you your money for any charges you incurred as a result of these calls.

I was able to look up the support ticket you mentioned and you're correct, our agent misread your email to us. This was not intentional and we've addressed it with our support team.

Also, our voicemail transcription feature is billed on a monthly basis and not per message so there shouldn't have been any extra charges for transcription of the messages.

I can assure you that our goal is not to make money off these calls but to make sure you're all set with your account and to answer any questions.

If you'd like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me at reviews(at)grasshopper(dot)com.
