I needed Brother Printer tech support. I typed in brother printer phone support. An ad on Google appeared to be from brother offering tech support. An agent, I thought to be from Brother, came online and started talking about my issue, then asked if could access my computer to diagnose and fix the problem. Thinking it was legitimate, I let him access my computer. He then went to a list of apparent intrusion incidents and said he believed the problem was possibly attacks from the outside and that my McAfee security was not adequate for my MAC computer. I asked if he knew of another security software. He went offline, then came back and recommended one that his company sells. He explained that they are the exclusive outsource phone support vendor for Brother. He then proceeded to provide me details of the security software and said it could be installed by them immediately and that I would receive a contract in the mail. He offered a lifetime support plan for $399.

He said it could be paid only with a check. At that point, I got suspicious and asked many questions about his business and told him I was worried about them installing software that might corrupt my computer and also be paying with cash with no recourse. To prove his company's legitimacy, he provided me his company's website: www.greentechsupport.com and gave me his name and number: TOLL FREE=1-866-215-6789 tech name=Simar. The website had an address in the Bronx and a map embedded. The site looked legitimate. I then told him I was uncomfortable and I was disconnecting him from my computer and wanted to confirm his company was legitimate. I then went to the real Brother website and reached phone support.

I asked if they outsource phone support to any companies. They said "never." I told them this business was using Google ad words to claim it has a legitimate relationship with Brother. I am a former SVP of two banks and ran credit card departments. I am not easily fooled. But, I was taken in by their use of Google Ad Words and their fraudulent use of the Brother name in their Google Ad Words. I should have been more cautious, but thought it was quite feasible that Brother outsources customer support. I was fortunate to avoid payment, but regrettably I did let a scammer have access to my computer and gave them my name, address and phone number. So, I am still at risk that they will use or sell that PII. if they fooled me, a relatively informed person, they likely are defrauding other consumers. They need to be stopped.
