Clearing some misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity...
AUTHOR: Devrie - ()

To the consumer who exclaimed that the original poster had $100,000 home donated to her, you're wrong. People donated the labor, including the homeowner herself. After that, the actual mortgage pays for the home, so if the value of the home itself is $90,000, she's paying for most of that herself--at least she's supposed to be. I do agree that it appears she is behind in her mortgage. It appears that she is upset that she lives where she lives, and with all the problems she's experienced, she hoped that Habitat would be more lenient to work with her. So the home isn't a gift. It's a zero interest loan on a home with donated labor. That's why the mortgage is so low. It's zero interest because of the labor and because Habitat acts as a lender as well as a contractor on a nonprofit basis.
To the homeowner's argument, she has little recourse if she is behind on her payments. Habitat for Humanity will generally help people avoid foreclosure by making a modification, but if the payments are that far behind, she missed the boat on communicating her problems paying the mortgage as soon as her situation changed. That's the problem. If you lose a job or have unfortunate circumstances and immediately call Habitat to show that you want to pay, they'd probably be more than willing to work with you--but not after $7,000 has yet to be paid, or $11,000--the homeowner waited far to long to try to work with them. If the homeowner was given zero choice in location, the local affiliate was being a bit too stringent, because the ultimate success of the homeowner will depend a little on location. I can see the homeowner's frustration in that situation; however, it has no relevance to the payment situation--and I think she's trying to tie the two together.
Based on my own experience with Habitat, I see that not all affiliates work exactly the same way. My local affiliate had a partner family member ask, "What if I don't like where the house is being built," to which another partner family member said, "Beggers can't be choosers." Well, our staff responded, "No, wait. This is a 20 to 30 year investment. You should consider where you want to live." In that essence, if a homeowner is not happy with the potential location, he or she can wait for the next available location. After several tries, he or she may drop to the bottom of the list, but it is not considered impolite for a homeowner to have discretion on where his or her new home will be built. Why? Habitat for Humanity generally wants the homeowner to be successful.
But to anyone reading this--yes, Habitat is a low-cost housing opportunity for people. The homes are very basic and modest, and the homeowner is paying a mortgage that covers the costs, AND the homeowner contributed to the labor of his or her home, and usually, to the labor of other homes being built. There are varying small required down-payments, and the contracts are decent but restrictive in terms of the homeowner's ability to move or sell the house. It's a solution. It's not always the best solution for everyone, but it is not a hand-out. It's a helping hand, for sure--but not a direct hand-out.

it makes sense...

I think what the original poster is saying is that she received a letter calling the whole loan due. In other words, her total balance to pay off the mortgage loan at that point was $11000. If she had been able to pay that off, she would have owed HFH no more money. She was not behind by $11000.

They say you owe 11,000? On a monthly payment of 728, that'd be about 15 months of not paying a dime with late penalties. Or at 348/month, that'd be about 30 months of not paying a dime with late penalties.
So, it sounds like nothing was paid over a year to two plus years. I understand, there is a feeling of winning the lottery when you get a HFH house as you get it for next to nothing. But, next to nothing is different than nothing. To me, it sounds like the amount still owed means that not a single dime was spent to get this house, minus the minor $2k in repair work needed...and a few monthly payments in the beginning.
An average person doesn't get their assets through donations. Can't really say HFH will sell it for a profit, as they are a non-profit who will "donate" the house to someone who appreciates how affordable they are.
Minimum wage in my state is 7.36/hr or 15308.80/annually. On minimum wage, that should still be mildly affordable. If you managed to get 100k+ in donations for the construction of the house, 11k+ should be an easy quantity to swindle in donations. It was a hard read as the wall of text was three sentences broken up by exclamation marks, but i think i got the gist.
