 Looking for classic car insurance, pass this company by if you are smart. I recently filled out the on line application after falling for the hype about insuring classic cars undergoing restoration. Hagerty claims to be THE premier company to insure through since they offer insurance on classic vehicles during all phases from undergoing restoration to Pebble Beach quality cars.  I've owned many classic and vintage cars from Rolls Royces to VW Beetles and a gaggle of Muscle cars, most of those were insured by JC taylor. Finding JC Taylors website and insurance approval method to be rather dated (mailing docs and such), I decided to try another company with complete on line access.

  After spending an hour and a half uploading documents etc. I finally completed the application and submitted it in order to gain insurance for my 1987 Mustang GT convertible. Two days later Hagerty called me and left a voice mail to call them back. Mind you, I have no violations, no accidents on my record, I affirmed that the vehicle was to only be driven by me and that the valuation I submitted can be edited by Hagerty if they felt it was necessary. The vehicle is currently undergoing restoration including a new top, paintwork and all of the mechanical was just completed. I insured it for what their on line calculator said it would be worth in its current condition at the time the application was filed.

  I called Hagerty back and I was told that there were two problems with my application and that I was denied. The valuation was too high (so I told the rep to lower it) because they felt it wasn't worth the amount their calculator spit out. Plus my son, who had an at fault accident 6 months ago gave reason for them to deny me. I told them that my son would not be operating the vehicle, and that he had his own vehicle to drive and that I would supply them with an affirmation that no one in the home beside myself would operate the car. No good. I pointed out to the rep that on their website that the agreed value may be adjusted, so i told him to adjust it accordingly. They refused...

  I also pointed out the first page of the website showed a rather beat up old Mustang being driven from the west coast to Hagerty headquarters, some 2300 miles to be restored. Apparently its ok to insure old Mustangs and drive them 2300 miles if you own the company but not if your the insured. 2300 miles is in violation of their own policy since there are many others dropped by Hagerty for exceeding the mileage clause. The condition of the Mustang is rather shoddy, but it qualifies for insurance because it is theirs and not mine.

  Don't waste your time with these hypocrites, the website is full of one sided reviews and lies. Look at the real world reviews on line and judge for yourself. Plus their quotes are often 3 times the amount of their competitors.
