April 16th 2004 went to Hall Jeep-Chrysler of Virginia Beach 3152 Virginia Beach Boulevard Virginia Beach VA 23452 to purchase a PT Cruiser which I had discussed with the salesman Mr. THarrington Battle with a faxed financed price of $17239.47 Including:
1) Automatic Transmission, Power Windows, AC
2) Midnight Blue
3) 7/70 Bumper to Bumper extened warranty
4) 0.9% Financing
5) Taxes & License Fees

Carrying the Faxed quote with me I finished some papers upstairs and was taken to Karen Clark in the finance office to sign additional paperwork.

Ms. Clark told me if I pay $330.00 a month for 60 months vs $308.00 a month I could have additional coverage including Road Hazard (Tire), Basic Maintenance (Oil Changes), Total Loss (GAP), and Environmental Protection. I asked her the dollar figure for the additional coverage and she didn't answer. So I tried calculating it myself.
Remember we'd been at this for what "seemed" like several hours and I was wearing down.. I calculated the 4 items to be $1320 by looking at the different packages on a display sheet Ms. Clark showed me. I had my friend Betty Lu with me and kept saying to her that $1320 seemed like a good price for all 4 additional coverage Items. Ms. Clark just sat and watched. Finally when I asked her again if the amount was $1320 she said yes.

She tried to get me to sign for the extended warrenty at 5 years 70,000 miles coverage. So I showed her the signed fax from Mr. Battle for 7/70 and she mumbled and changed it to 7/70.

Finished up, went home slept for a few hours. Reread the contract and found Total amount Financed to be $19386.57 not $17239.47+1320.00 ($18559.47).

Come to find out the 4 items were $783 $599 $249 and $480 = $2111.00. Was told the next morning that everything was submitted and couldn't be changed, I was upset at being lied to despite bringing a witness, getting a signed fax and confirming all amounts verbally. I told everyone involved I wanted all 4 warrenties cancelled. Went to Attorney General for help which pressured Dennis Moore the General sales manager to review the Video tape from the Finance office. He was abrupt aggressive and non-apologetic. But agreed to remove all 4 items when I returned to Hall he had A paper with only 2 items removed. It took several more days to get him to remove all 4 extended warrenties, what a fight..

My 7/70 warranty? It went in as 6/60.. I had to get that changed..

I've also got a long term shuddering, stalling, check engine light etc. problem at least from Oct 04 to today 15 Mar 06. I have 7 Documented shop visits and it's still not right, but I'll write that one up later.

Take a look at my writing above and decide for yourself if I'm a good communicator or not..

There was NO misunderstanding or miscommunication on my part , I was lied to and cheated. And when the facts were presented no one at Hall or Daimler Chrysler cared. And Hall fought to keep it's ill gotten gains. I've got a witness and lots of paper documents.

These People are hard core crooks.. Do not do business with them.

Legroom...

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 15, 2006

You were a victim of a dishonest sales tactic called "legroom." It works like this: They lie about the payment without the options. They make it higher. In your case the payment on the basic deal with no optional warranties, etc. (at the same 0.9% APR) would have been $294 instead of $308. Then they sell you the options on the basis that they'll only cost a few dollars more per month. Actually you are comparing to a false figure without the options.

Be very vigilant in the finance office. Pay attention to the amount financed, number of payments, and the APR. The payments will work out by themselves based on that. Do not be a "payment buyer." Beware of papers like the infamous "menus" that show only the down and monthly payment but not the supporting numbers. Do not make decisions based on them. Ask for more details like the total "out the door" cost of the deal.

Figure before you shop what price range of vehicles you should be looking at based on the payment you can afford, the amount you'll need to finance, and the APR you're likely to qualify for. There are various calculator web pages to help. You can also buy a handheld finacial calculator at any office store that will figure the payments on a loan for you. Then you can tell on the spot if the dealer is trying to work "legroom" into the numbers.

Finance people are sales people too!!

I read your report, you communicated it very well. I work for a dealership now, after you get through with the sales person getting there markup, you go to the finance office and they too are sales people, they can mark up the finance charge percentage and sell you warranties that WILL be included in the contract and you will be charged finance charges for them to.

Your best bet was to not finance the warranties but to pay out of pocket for them and then you may have found out before signing a contract that it would not have been the $1320.00 but the $2111.00 instead, maybe the cat would have been out of the bag before hand

Finance managers have you sign contracts at the end, your tired, don't look over it well because you have signed your life away already with other papers.

Also, once you do sign up for warranties, some will charge a cancellation fee even if it is only 24 hours later but the time frame you mentioned, the dealership probably still had it sitting on their desk.

Hope this info will help in the future
